Zortel was my first character in Beta, and in Retail, and is my only level 50. She was my first RP character, created as a kind of homage to Samus Aran, Tony Stark and Sylia from Bubblegum Crisis. She's quite interesting to play, a mix of mother, scientist and she's also fairly villainous, to an extent. She's like a Good Countess Crey. Zortel

[edit] Overview

Zortel (Also known as Zorielle Rolando) is the leader of the Unity Vigil Supergroup, and has been heroing for five years in the suit of powered armour in which she gets her hero alias from. Having started heroing in the first war, she has gone on to be a member of several supergroups, the leader of one supergroup and hero organization, a DATA liasion and friend to several heroes in the city. She currently resides on a private island in the South Pacific, named Rolando Island, and owns one nearby.

Zorielle tends to alternate between leader and mother personality wise, and tends to go above and beyond the call of duty for friends, family and members of the Unity Vigil. She has a slightly different set of morals to others though, and believes strongly in science and its uses and research.

Zorielle was first motivated to become a hero by the death of her first partner, this world's Tessa Lesnon. Afterwards, she started doing what she was to help people and heroes have a better life, and in the name of science and technological advancement.

Zortel gains her powers from her suit, using two gloves called Energy Variance Emitter units, which are powered by Crystaline Energy Discs, two of which spin in opposing ways to each other, the energy fields creating a highly efficient and powerful source of energy. The rest of her suit is built into this.

[edit] Energy Blast

Zortel's gloves can focus highly powerful and variable blasts of energy through a series of focusing lenses build into the wrist of the glove. In addition, commands can be issued to unlock energy limiters for a brief moment for more powerful blasts, but the gloves can only do this once before needing to recharge a little.

Further controls let Zortel increase the power, range and blast of her gloves, and energy efficiency.

[edit] Force Mastery

The Zortel Suit can create an energy-intensive shield that protects her from harm and deflects most attacks, which can be boosted higher if needed, but operation of energy blasts is disabled during this time. It can also create a field that protects Zortel from physical attacks, and in a dire situation this can be overloaded along with other systems to output a high intensity energy aura that gives her protection from most attacks, and can still use her energy weapons, but will deplete energy reserves fully after a while of operation.

Zortel's suit can interface with various computer systems, and she can teleport herself to various locations using a network of teleportation satellites.

The Zortel suit has stable flight capabilities, and the boots of the suit can generate an energy field that lets her move on the ground at fast speeds, phasing out slightly to reduce visibility.

The Zortel suit can temporarily increase its cooling and energy output to fire out blasts faster, though at the end of this cycle the energy reserves take a hit as the systems purge the nanomites in the system optimizing efficiency.

For her age, Zorielle is a remarkably fit woman, and the suits ability to replenish its energy and heal over minor damage thanks to nano-regeneration increases her field time by a fair amount.

Plates in the suit let Zortel camoflage herself from most forms of detection.

Zorielle is trained in martial arts and self defence, and has a wide and far-reaching range of knowledge on technology, as well as being a skilled tactician.

[edit] Early Background

Zorielle was born on the 16th of August, 1974, to Christopher and Anita Rolando, a pair of wealthy socialites who inherited a fortune from Christopher's family. Shew grew up alternating between a penthouse in Dark Astoria, Paragon City and a mansion in the countryside of Rhode Island, where her parents held lavish parties. She met her best friend, Tessa Lenson, when she was 11, the two forming a close bond. When Zorielle's parents died from a drug overdose when she was 16, she inherited what was left of the family fortune, arranged for the sale of the two homes and was able to move into a small appartment in Skyway City to continue her education. It was around that time when Zorielle came out as a lesbian, settling into a relationship with Tessa. Two years later, the pair graduated and were accepted into Paragon City University's Founders Falls campus, where she and Tessa earned their various diplomas and doctorates in the sciences.

[edit] Buisness Career & The First Rikti Invasion

The two used Zorielle's remaining money to set up ZorTel Industries and buy themselves equipment and a building in Skyway City, where they began to develop their technologies and patterns, working for several years on the designs, using patents and licenses to gain income for living expenses. On May 23rd 2002, the couple held an investors meeting at their workshop for people to see their finished technologies, ranging from high tech computer systems, flight suits, shielding systems, a unique form of energy generator and the ZorTel suit, utilizing the Energy Varience Emitter Gloves. After signing contracts and transferring money over, the worst happened when the Rikti invaded, and Zorielle put on the ZorTel Suit in order to fight.


In the battle to protect the Zortel Industries building against the Rikti so Tessa would have time to make the experiments inside safe, Zortel helped save many lives of the people in her neighbourhood, but tragedy happened when plasma blasts hit the Zortel Industries building, causing extensive damage. Zorielle disengaged from battle and flew back, but too late to rescue her wife who was tragically mortally wounded from falling support beams. Waiting with her till her wife passed, Zorielle flew back out and began a cold, calculating assault against the Rikti, fighting all night and saving hundreds to thousands of people as she pushed herself, and the suit, to the limit, before finally sucumbing to fatigue that morning. Facing off one last time against a Rikti Headman Gunner, she was able to defeat the invader, but sustained heavy injuries to her abdomen from a plasma rifle blast.


She was rescued by a group of heroes and treated in hospital before being evacuated, managing to recover, though lost her reproductive system due to extensive injuries. Spending the rest of the war recovering, she spent her times in quiet contemplation, wondering what to do with her life now that she had lost her partner and best friend.

Using the money she got from the deals on that fateful day, Zorielle set about rebuilding her company and her life, moving into the building that would later become Unity Tower and also worked on repairing the ZorTel suit. Amassing a fortune from shrewd investments and purchases, business skill and the technology she was producing, ZorTel Industries soon became one of the leading high-tech companies in Paragon City.

While dealing with an alcohol problem and the stresses of running her buisness, she was able to rebuild the ZorTel suit and return to work as a hero, in memory of her departed wife. In late 2004, she responded to a break in at Cooke's Electronics and found the niece of Tessa Lenson, Hannah Williams robbing the store on behalf of the Outcasts. Having lost contact with Hannah after Tessa's death, Zortel sent Hannah to a Youth Detention Centre for her crimes.

A few months later, Zortel was approached by Shadowplay, of the Society of the Phoenix about a position with the group. Having worked solo for several years, she decided to give this a try and joined to help the society in their work, and began attending the meetings of heroes under Galaxy Girl's Statue, where she made many friends and contacts, and some enemies, in the metahuman community. Around this time, she adopted Hannah, and let Hannah's homeless best friend Pyroclast move in, letting her stay when Pyroclast turned out to be Hannah's girlfriend.

Dark times were ahead when Hannah began to succumb to instability in her mutant powers, and conflicts with friends and a situation with one of Zorielle's best friends lead her attention away whilst Hannah struggled with these difficulties. Sadly, she passed away due to complications from her problem, leaving Zorielle and her daughter's girlfriend and their friends devastated.

Things took a sinister turn when from an alternate dimension, Xortel arrived. Seeking revenge on Zortel, this power-armour suited woman turned out to be an alternate version of Tessa Lenson, who fled her dimension after killing her abusive partner. In addition, a mysterious robot appeared who seemed to have some of Hannah's memories. Luckily for Zortel, things took a turn for the better, when Tessa realised that this Zorielle wasn't the same one she had murdered and fled from, and the pair fell in love. The robot with Hannah's memories was discovered to have been created by nanomites that contained Hannah, that were in her blood at the time of her death. Transfering her conciousness to a new body, things soon settled back into domestic bliss for the family.

[edit] Recent History

Joining the group set up by Nevermore, The Vigil, Zorielle continued her work for the city and its people, even while Tessa was expecting children, produced using advanced genetic techniques. Fighting various battles with villain groups, when the time came for her wife to give birth, Zortel passed the suit on to Jessica Kade, and retired, selling up and shutting down ZorTel Industries and buying an island in the South Pacific, moving over to raise her children in peace and safety as well as continue her research.

She went on to form the Unity Vigil, and joined leaders of various groups in the Second Rikti War, leading a team through the Abandoned Sewer Network in Steel Canyon to attack their underground supplies and stockpiles, as well as organizing the Rock Against The Rikti concert at Unity Tower.

  • Zorielle was known widely as one of the most successful lesbian businesswoman in the world while she lead ZorTel Industries, and often spoke with various magazines and TV shows on the subject of homosexuality.
  • Zorielle owns every Police Academy film on VHS and DVD, much to her daughter's embarrassment.
  • There are many rumours that her and the government do not get along, and that they would like to have a rather intensive look around Rolando Island.
