Allies: Hyperion Watchmen • Shades of Darkness
[edit] Background
Originally brought together by a concerned billionaire, the Militia has evolved into a group of diverse but likeminded people united in their efforts to restore order within the city.
The focus of the Militia is more on threats to the city and its citizens rather then other-dimensional or external threats but will rise to the challenge when required. Their base in Kings Row keeps them in touch with the citizen on the street through their drop in centre but their expertise has ensured that they are capable of responding to larger scale threats when the need arises.
In the past, their activities have seen them stopping anti-mutant riots, removing dangerous genetic weaponry from the streets and fighting on the frontline of the battle against the Rikti’s second invasion.
[edit] Activities
The Militia meet every Wednesday from 7:30pm to combat threats to the city and progress their investigations. They can often be seen afterwards relaxing and discussing events in Pocket D.
[edit] Recent Events
Tragedy struck in November 2008 when a man walked into the Eric Mitchell Memorial Clinic and exploded, causing the destruction of the building. Although the Militia and the Hyperion Watchmen were able to evacuate everyone from the collapsing building, this event unveiled a new beginning for the urban supergroup. With the clinic destroyed, the two teams decided to join together to face the threat that had struck at both of them.
It transpired that an anti-mutant faction had targeted the centre to begin a mock war with a militantly pro-mutant faction within the city. The survivors of the disaster assisted the Militia in uncovering the truth behind the attack and were officially recognised in an ‘academy’ program which trained new heroes to use their powers.
In the summer of 2009, the Militia were responsible for uncovering secret Council research into creating super soldiers through genetic manipulation. A result of the Council’s research, a terrifying weapon that could completely remove a mutant’s powers was encountered a number of times and caused a few casualties amongst the Militia’s ranks. Eventually, Archon Henderson, the head of the rogue science division, used the machine on himself to steal mutations from a number of the city’s heroes, becoming a huge, towering monster brimming with mutated powers. By destabilising them, the Militia were able to topple him and cause the bloated being to explode. The resulting fallout caused a number of mutations in the surrounding area, some of the survivors of which became new students in the Militia’s academy program.
Recently the Militia have been investigating an invasion of mysterious, shadowy creatures that seem to be attracted to objects that originate from other dimensions.

[edit] Command Structure
On the ground operations are run by the Militia’s field commanders, Crimson Archer and the Amber Banshee. However these tasks are now shared with the leaders of the Hyperion Watchmen, Bastinado and White Vampyr since the effective merger of the two teams in late 2008. A dedicated IT network has been set up between the two teams so that they effectively work as one through shared resources.
There is also a second tier of team leaders in Estoque, Wavekite and The Portent.
[edit] Resources
The Dugout, the Militia’s last base of operations, has been mostly decommissioned. All its facilities for storage, teleportation, medical, and workshop facilities are now relocated to The Hub, a new high-rise block built in Kings Row to replace the Eric Mitchell Memorial building and the Hyperion Clinic and Militia Drop-in Centre that were within.
The Hub is contained within the upper floors of the new high-rise, while lower floors are given to commercial use and some residential space. As well as a well resourced science lab, the lower levels of the base have been converted to house Spidermonkey’s technological workshop where the genius can be found innovating new devices and research for the team’s use. He also provides technological back up and support with monitoring and diagnostics provided by Stanley Splitkin who is situated in the Hyperion Watchmen’s base. Tactical information and reconnaissance is assisted by The Portent.
The medical facilities are headed up by Songthrush who’s empathic skills are utilised by those heroes who require medical attention. He is occasionally assisted by Karnac where more advanced knowledge of genetics is called for. For more advanced research, the facilities of the Hyperion Watchmen’s base, The Bunker can be used, a seamless network running between the two locations, allowing joint operations.
From their coalition with the Shades of Darkness, the Militia are able to call upon a number of skilled mages and conjurers. This, along with occasional help from Dante Carver gives the Militia some skill in the realms of the arcane.
[edit] Headquarters
The Hub is a custom build base located in the upper floors of a new tower block erected in the High Park neighbourhood of Kings Row. Built to specific requirements after the destruction of the Hyperion Clinic, it is comprised of several levels:
-Lower Floors-
The street level of the building is an open plan mall with facilities for the local area. A community centre, health clinic, citizens advice bureau and drop in centre along with a variety of shops surround a pleasant meeting place for local citizens.
A simple reception desk for the Militia is situated near to the middle, allowing citizens to contact the supergroup easily. Imogen Gainsborough, also known as Power Sink, mans the reception desk and responds to all telephone, email and personal enquiries. An intelligent answerphone system is operational for when Imogen is not at the desk and all of the security systems can be operated remotely from within the base if needed.
-Mid Level-
The reconstructed Hyperion Clinic takes up the middle part of the tower block. Recognised for its expertise in dealing with late onset mutation as well as those caused by external factors, the clinic has led research into this area and has been able to help hundreds of people learn how to adapt to and overcome their difficulties.
-Upper Floors-
The remaining floors house the Hub itself as the central base for the Militia. Equipped with the latest technology, the vast network of computers and observation equipment does not detract from the pleasant open plan base which is often busy with the group’s activities.

[edit] History
This is just a brief summary of the group's history to date (with a few recent months currently missing). To read extensive recaps, see Militia Episodes.
[edit] June 2006
Concerned at the rising level of crime within the city, eccentric billionaire Sir Michael Wayne decides to create and fund his own supergroup. He sends his agents to find individuals who show potential for recruitment and invite them to join the group either by direct invitation or underhand persuasion. Choosing not to expose himself to unfavourable publicity, he hides himself and his staff under the name of The Ministry. The rag tag bunch of heroes take time to connect and at first it seems like an experiment doomed to failure. However in time, the team begin to respect each other and learn how to combine their talents. Natural leaders in the field emerge and help to bring a sense of order to the team, bringing the fighting force that is the Militia into the forefront of the media spotlight. The team’s effectiveness is cemented with the defeat of the Clockwork King and an extended battle with his greatest creation, Babbage.
[edit] August 2006
Shame falls on the Militia when it transpires that one of its members, Dragonfly, is accused of committing multiple murders in her homeland of China. The case causes the Militia to fall under suspicion causing many members to go into hiding or become reviled by the public for their association with her. The case is eventually overturned but not before the Militia’s standing with the general public has been damaged by the allegations. Despite the bad press, more and more aspiring heroes apply for membership and the group grows, accepting all those who wish to learn.
[edit] October 2006
In an unexpected move, the criminal organisation known as the New Mafia kidnap Sir Michael Wayne and hold him for ransom. The Mafia did not expect a ransom and were merely holding Sir Michael to lure the Militia into a confrontation in Siren’s Call. The fight ends with a stand-off both groups suffering losses. Following the battle, Sir Michael is forced to reveal his identity to the Militia once he is released. To this day, he maintains a significant distance from the team.
Further, the hero known as Nightsparrow, a recent recruit to the Militia is killed by an explosion in Siren’s Call. At first it is expected that it might have been retribution for the rescue of Sir Michael although it later transpires that Nightsparrow survived the blast, triggered by her nemesis, Grinning Nightmare.
Soon afterwards, the Amber Banshee is kidnapped by The Cabal in an attempt to get her to join them. The Militia mobilises to free her from their captivity. They are assisted briefly by a villain who claims to be a friend of Amber’s.
Towards the end of the month, mysterious creatures start to appear round the city, terrorising innocent civilians. The Militia go on patrol to quell the uproar, culminating in a savage battle with a huge monster in Galaxy City. The event ends up being videoed by a local news crew and is broadcast on local TV. The event serves to raise the Militia’s somewhat tarnished profile.
[edit] November 2006
Following his exposure to the radiation from the meteorites in Bloody Bay, Force Commander’s 27 senses begin to overload and he is unable to contain himself, his brain overloaded with information, making him almost pre-cognitive. He flees, the Militia in hot pursuit. Although disruptive arrows from Crimson Archer’s bow and the Amber Banshee’s singing help to suppress his mania, the team is eventually forced to dope him when they finally track him down in Croatoa. He is later fitted with a Freakshow implant that helps to suppress his extra senses when necessary.
[edit] December 2006
The Militia once again comes under scrutiny thanks to Dragonfly’s activities. Each member is requested to wear tracking devices and submit themselves to psycho-metric analysis. Some members comply, some refuse and others simply disappear off the face of the planet. Eventually the charges are dropped once again, thanks no doubt to the expert legal team put together by the Ministry. The event though brings the group into even more disrepute and the group begins to gain a reputation for taking on dangerous vigilantes.
The Militia and the New Mafia clash again in Siren’s Call due to the theft of an ancient sword by Dragonfly. The battle becomes so out of control, the Silent Tempest, a fellow supergroup are forced to intervene, wresting the sword from New Mafia boss Pistol.
[edit] January 2007
The Militia member Hyperdrive, having lain in a coma for over six months finally regained consciousness. Somewhat delirious and believing himself to be under attack, he blazed a trail through the city, demolishing a hospital along the way. The Militia were on hand to save patients and staff from the hospital and to track down their errant member. They were assisted along the way by a mysterious man who claimed to be Hyperdrive’s trainer. He was soon revealed to be an android training unit responsible for apprehending Hyperdrive for a shady corporate body. This led the Militia into a conflict with the machine who proved to be virtually indestructible. Weakened by successive attacks, including a high speed assault from Hyperdrive, the android was finally teleported to the Ziggursky penitentiary.
[edit] February 2007
Finally turning, the conflicted hero Dragonfly turned on her group and led them on a chase through the city’s main port. Although the Militia tried to stop her escape, they were eventually forced to fight her and her sudden accomplice Genesis Blade in martial combat. Following their conflict, Dragonfly announces her plan to return to her native China, free from further pursuit. She is very rarely seen again.
Hyperdrive, having suffered from adverse effects for weeks, begins to lose control once again. Having escaped the Zig, TRACOR-005 contacts the Militia demanding that the hero be brought to him else he will die. Unwilling to submit to either medical testing or TRACOR-005, Hyperdrive attempts to escape but is eventually consumed by his own accelerated metabolism. TRACOR-005 swears revenge on the Militia for the loss of such and expensive ‘commodity’.
[edit] March 2007
Another death in the ranks follows soon afterwards when an explosion rips through a building in Founders Falls. Consumed in the blast is the hero Nightsparrow, recently married to Silent Tempest leader Coile and expecting his child. The Amber Banshee, disturbed by the loss of so many heroes, takes it upon herself to investigate the matter.
A petition, innocently started by a young hero manages to divide the hero community due to controversial wording. Averting what appears to be escalating into a civil war, the Militia proves instrumental in issuing a revised petition that leads to the creation of two new civil holidays.
[edit] April 2007
Another Militia member disappears under mysterious circumstances when Lady Cobra vanishes while investigating a human trafficking ring in the Rogue Isles. Injured in a mine explosion, the hero survives only by the virtue of her advanced healing powers. Cobra resigns from the Militia shortly after.
Following a tip off, the Militia send a team to the Terra Volta reactor which is under assault by the Sky Raiders. Resisting the pirate’s assault, the team are crucial in protecting the reactor from being destroyed. Unfortunately, the radiation from the reactor proves to be detrimental to many of the team. Lady Patriot suffers emotionally while Arrow Flame bleeds under the radiation bombardment. Worst of all, Force Commander finds that the radiation once again boosts his numerous senses to beyond superhuman levels. His perception, piercing the walls of time and space lead him to point an accusatory finger at the Portent declaring that the team should beware.
[edit] May 2007
A routine inspection of a Freakshow hideout leads the Militia to discover a plot to blow up the city using sonic bombs. Racing against time, the team are able to trace the bombs into the sewers where they deactivate them with only minutes to spare. Amidst the celebrations however, an explosion is heard over the comms channel that potentially consumed fragile hero GhostSpy. A Militia investigation into his disappearance begins. And following a lead on the murder of Nightsparrow, the Amber Banshee disappears, leaving no clues as to her whereabouts.
[edit] June 2007
The Amber Banshee is found and rescued from the Hand of Andros by a team comprising of the Crimson Archer, Coile, Love Angel, Redsight, Found and Dante Carver wielding his deadly Masamune Blade. Unfortunately, the team takes heavy losses against the Hand's vicious security system, and Redsight and Dante Carver are killed in the process of freeing the Amber Banshee. Found loses one of his arms and Crimson Archer loses an Eye.
[edit] July 2007
The GhostSpy is found trapped underground, but is rescued by the Militia. The entire investigation is long and mysterious, raising questions about GhostSpy's past. Meanwhile, the team attempts to deal with their losses during the Hand of Andros mission.
[edit] August 2007
The Rikti Invade again and Sir Micheal Wayne is killed in the crisis. Along with many other brave heroes. During this dark period, Wayne Industries liquidate the Militia assets and the team is Officially Disbanded.
[edit] September 2007
With the financial support of millionaires Britanic and Crimson Archer, the Militia reforms. Using "the Dugout", an old underground shelter in Kings Row, as their new base of operations. The Militia immediately returned to action, successfully preventing a nuclear disaster in Terra Volta.
[edit] October 2007
In a press conference called by the hero Britanic, he announced the newly reformed Militia’s intention to "clean up Kings Row", where the super team is now based. However this clean up doesn’t just refer to the high levels of crime that has historically plagued the Row, but rather physically helping to restore some of the Row’s most neglected and downtrodden areas.
[edit] November 2007
The return of Pistol and the Gang prompted the Priest to rejoin the Militia and prepare for conflicts. Shadow Pariah goes missing and an investigation is launched.
[edit] December 2007
Amber Banshee thanked both Night's Child and Powerstone for their help in locating her father, confirming the alliance between the Militia and the Shades of Darkness. She left their company distraught but determined to bring an end to her father’s torment.
[edit] 2008
Finally escaping the vast laboratory, new recruit Holly Steel and the Amber Banshee hung out in a café in Overbrook where they were joined by Luna Starbright and Wavekite. Wavekite was low also, having drawn a blank in her search for Found, the reformed member of the Lost who had been missing from their ranks since the last Rikti invasion. They speculated on what could have happened to him and whether if he had gone back to the Lost, if he was happier there. Amber showed them the shard of locating crystal that she had recently used to find her absent father but stopped short of saying what she had seen. She regretted not using it to track Found instead, the arcane device having only a one time use. Leaving them to consider what to do next, Amber headed home.
When the super group, The Militia, were disbanded by their corporate sponsor in September last year, few people expected to hear from them again. It was seen by most as closing the book on this team of heroes, who had spent over a year on the streets of Paragon City protecting its citizens from the likes of Dr Vahizlock and The Clockwork King, while at the same time courting so much controversy. But for some, the story was far from over. I met with Amber Banshee and Britanic, two people who still have faith in the potential that a group like The Militia has to offer.
“I’m not saying we are going to give up on the likes of Nemesis, the Rikti, and Arachnos just to become social workers. I want The Militia to become more accessible to the public, not just something to look up to. I want us to be able to inspire the community to help themselves. If that means we get our hands a little dirty cleaning up places, like Jimmy Carter ball park, then so be it. If we can do more good visiting a local school, speaking, and more importantly listening to the children, then I want us doing that too" she said.
Poking their noses into a high level meeting between Crey and the Malta Group is often a recipe for trouble as the assembled Militia proved, earning them the ire of both groups. It was however, the discovery of a lead on the missing scientist Dr Gregory that had the team of The Amber Banshee, Rockheed, Holly Steel, Luna Starbright, Gauisus Somnium, The Priest, Wavekite and Shadow Pariah dashing over the city to rescue him from another band of errant Rikti. Joined by White Vampyr of the Hyperion Watchmen, they were unable to rescue the errant scientist, the victims being teleported away before they could do anything. One remained long enough to slip a note to them though, nothing more than an address in The Hollows.
[edit] Recent History
The Militia has founded The Academy, a group which promises to introduce new heroes to the world of heroing. Notable members include:
The Academy allowed The Militia to put more new heroes on the streets as more senior members of the Militia got called to larger events. The first wave of students of The Academy are all now fully-fledged heroes in their own right.
Following the destruction of the monster known as Gestalt (the hideously mutated form of Archon Henderson, a number of civilians received powers from the fallout of the explosion. After a report by the FSBA criticised the group for failing to take action earlier, the Militia started a second year of their Academy program to enable the citizens to reclaim their lives. Current members are:
Rocky Powers, Dragonstar, Chic Doyle, Silver Herald, Silver Dryad, Void Reaver and Nikki Siren. The veteran hero Carver has been commissioned by the FSBA to monitor the group’s activities.
