[edit] Discussion: Banner Size

Looks great, but it's way too wide now! :p

FloatingFatMan 06:29, 19 August 2007 (MST)

What's too wide Float, the banner or the news windows? So I can investigate properly, thanks. - Pious

[edit] Discussion: Featured Articles

While youre at that Pious, make both pictures excactly the same size... you can add a white part under the smallest one. The layout will be better for it. Both underlying articles will start at exactly the same level then... making an easier to look at layout.

btw.. Totally love the magazine/newspaper idea :), fantastic... Can we keep it?

User:Stephen Strange

By the way pious.. what about staying in color sceme with the hero and villain side like the game itself and make the hero side blue (what is now the villain side) and the villain side the same shade but red?

User:Stephen Strange

Sorry, the two articles side by side are just too wide. I tend to keep my browser the same width as the official boards. I don't mind the banner running off the edge of the page, but with the two articles side by side, I have to scroll to read the magazine one.

It's not a major bother really, but some people can only go to 1024x768, so it'd cause issues for them.

FloatingFatMan 08:43, 19 August 2007 (MST)

[edit] Discussion: Featured Magazines

Maybe its better, and rather easy, to make the total width of the page 1024 pixels. That would prob make the banner about 950 pixels width and the magazine and News paper each about 425 pixels. You will have to measure it out precicely offcourse. But people with only 1024 as resolution will be very happy with you.

ps. Where is the 'Capes' magazine from..? It looks waaay cool. Would like to look for a cool photo to have Elizabeth on the cover there.

User:Stephen Strange

As I understand it, Capes is just a mock magazine cover made up by Blackdove.

FloatingFatMan

So far I understood.. But does he do more? Does he make regular? Can I give suggestions?

And... if I make a playboy kind off magazine would it be used on the wiki too?

User:Stephen Strange

The magazine cover CAPES is indeed a manipulated work. See this thread for the original cover and commentary about the end result.

Additionally I will point out that the thread contains a link that takes the viewer to a picture that contains nudity. There is a visible mention of it so just be mindful what you click.

- Coile

And... if I make a playboy kind off magazine would it be used on the wiki too?

I very much doubt any nudity would be permitted in the Wiki. And rightly so as it'd cause all SORTS of problems for Pious and Zortel.

FloatingFatMan

It's a great photo manip at least... Looks even better at bigger size. And I think my fragile soul can handle a bit of nudity.

User:Stephen Strange

Perhaps it can, but don't forget that City of Heroes is a 12 rated game, so such material definitely isn't appropriate for the wiki.

Besides, the kind people who are hosting our wiki probably wouldn't appreciate it either!

FloatingFatMan

Agreed... So happy that City of Villains is rated 16+. hmmm... Maybe a FHM version. That has bikini clad girls on it. Oh well.. not enough hours in a day anyway.

User:Stephen Strange

Hey guys. Just got back from work and I'm off to bed soon, but I like the idea of scaling the Main Page width down to suit the 1024x768 resolutions as is the City of Heroes Front page; we'll discuss the possibilities in this week's meeting. Kadekawa is the expert at the codings, hopefully he'll know the best way to do it. But, I'm sure it can be done; I even have a rough idea how. - Pious

Okay, I've shrunk the windows down to size by cropping away unnecessary text and images, hopefully this should make the Main Page easier to view. :) - Pious

[edit] Suggestion: List of Chat Channels

How about adding a page to the wiki for the various known (moderated) in game channels devoted to role-play? This would help to make this resource the one stop shop for everything role-play. --Elrada

It's not a bad idea but most groups have their own channel and tend to like keeping it to their own groups. As far as I'm aware, there is no one universal channel for roleplay. Still if there isn't, maybe there should be. I guess people who want their channels known will publicise them. --User:Dante

The GGOOC global channel is a general OOC roleplay chat channel. Though it has roots around GG in its name, as it predates Pocket D, it's intended for ANY roleplayers to chat OOC with other roleplayers.

It's sort of moderated, but ONLY to keep swearing or arguments under control and nothing else.

FloatingFatMan

I think there are too few universally-used global channels to devote a section to. - Pious

Plus GGOOC can be a little... manic at times, heck, I've been known to contribute to the mania on occasion. Perhaps it's something to consider, a UnionRP global channel, where people can request IC help and such, not to replace any of the other global channels (I've hardly ever seen anyone request RP on GGOOC, it was mainly designed at first to replace the need for teams for OOC chatter and reducing OOC spam in local), or for people to ask for ideas and the like.

Your friendly neighbourhood Zortel

[edit] Note: Image Upload Errors

An update to localsettings.php may be needed. Recently I have tried to upload images to this wiki and been told that they are either corrpt or have an incorrect extention. Now this is a known "issue" with mediawiki and there is a workaround - I found this out after pulling out what little hair I have left when trying to see why my remote webserver refused to upload an image file which was uploaded just fine to the webserver on my iBook.

The fix required the following two lines to be added to the end of the localsettings.php file

$wgMimeDetectorCommand= "file -bi";
$wgVerifyMimeType = false; //false? Don't you want true now?

Now I am aware that you will be concerned about making changes to localsettings.php - it scares the hell out of me at times. I have therefore provided a link to the source of my information so that you can make an informed decision here

The source does refer to updating the mimedetector software on the server but I only added the two lines to my localsettings.php and the files which I had previously been told were corrupt (and I knew they were perfectly fine) uploaded without any problems at all.

The reason why I was not getting the error on my iBook (which has the same mediawiki setup as the server I pay for) is due to the fact that the iBook has a more current version of the Apache webserver software than that used by the hosting company - seems they are happy to take your money but not so happy to update their software when patched versions are released.

I may have been the only one to have found this problem but thought I should share it anyway - sorry if this location is not the correct one. --Elrada 09:55, 10 September 2007 (MST)

[edit] Question: Weekly Updates

So... Weekly updates are dropped? Or have you been too busy? Just wondering... --Mr. Erth

[edit] Discussion: Targeted Vandalism

User Privileges. This wiki does not allow normal users to "undo" changes in the individual page histories. The link is simply missing where it would be in different MediaWikis. While not really nescessary for a page of this size it would make it more convenient and more traceable to remove modifications of spammers for normal users... Marksmaid 00:29, 28 October 2007 (MST)

noticing a few of these about, the IP 129.123.104.8 seems to have tagged a few pages with a random letter string, which is later added to by another IP, with a string of links (presumably to advertising sites... i wouldn't follow them, personally).

if its possible, i recommend blocking that IP, and any other showing up in the Edits as putting in the links. Lunk

I doubt that would work, because I've just erased a load of spam and it seems to be coming from a few different IPs. Block them nonetheless if possible guys, but blocking a few won't stop it all. Doctor Bolt

I doubt that does much good. IP addresses do not belong to their users, but the companies that own them; they are assigned as needed. Additionally the IP addresses used to place spam come from completely different ranges. I looked up two of them in the whois database. One belonged to a pharmacy company in China and another to an internet hosting service in Phoenix, USA. It is possible that the troublemakers access of the Tor network, or something like this. The address you mention 129.123.104.8, belongs to a class B network (about 65k addresses) owned by the Utah state university... Marksmaid 03:41, 29 October 2007 (MST)

I've noticed that it only seems to be certain characters that are being hit by spam - Riled

Then perhaps its possible to allow editing ONLY for registered users? Lunk

That wouldn't be a hindrance. Since everyone can register at any time. Even if the email addresses were verified someone who really wanted to could simply create new email addresses. Marksmaid 03:41, 29 October 2007 (MST)

I've spoken to Chief Administrator Kadekawa about the recent problem of targeted vandalism and advert-spamming from non-members and we've decided to restrict page editing to members only. I know for a some people, this means tediously logging in for quick edits, if working from different computers, but lets face it, thats highly unlikely and the security of your pages outweighs the inconvenience of logging in. Pious

[edit] Discussion: Category listing

Appears to have become mis-aligned, I'm guessing by the length of the 'supergroup plots' category. Just looks a little messy is all. @Smee D'yer.

EDIT: Making the second section width 16%, and the last section width 18%, seems to sort it out.

[edit] Marked for Deletion Page?

Just a Suggestion but would it be possible to add a marked for deletion page so if anyone wanted some of their items removed from the wiki they could post up a link for it to be deleted, just I have a few pages for my characters that no longer exist so was hoping for a faster system to get them removed with.

Cybian

Unfortunately, there aren't any navigation sections here for admin requests except the talk page but its okay, its just as quick and as easy to use. Leave a request on the admin talk pages User talk:Admin and it'll get done. Thanks, Pious.
