The Shades of Darkness are one of the lower profile supergroups, almost never mentioned in the press, avoiding media attention. This does not mean they are unknown. Their low public profile is a combination of their ability to work secretly, and the part of human nature that would often choose to forget them.

The Shades are not the bright and glorious heroes the media so adores. Many are shadowy, dark, and even frankly frightening. They are the heroes that take the fight into the darkest places, that fight the battles many are not even aware of, because those dark places are where the Shades are at home.

Shades of Darkness have unlikely seeming alliances with several of the lighter and brighter heroes and their groups. The media darling teenage mutant heroine Miss Teen has known the Shades for much of her career. Britanic and Crimson Archer of the Militia are both well aquainted with Powerstone, a high profile member of the Shades who somehow keeps their name out of his public life.

The Guild of Gentlemen Adventurers are one of the most notable connections to those who know of these shadowy groups. The leaders of the Guild found a home from home within the Shades of Darkness, and their influence seems to have grown within the Shades.

The Shades of Darkness have a base known simply as The Sanctum, a vast base of strong stone walls that is located in its own pocket dimension. The pocket dimension moves about in N-dimensional space, making it impossible to teleport to without some kind of beacon or anchor for such access at the other end.

It has never been breached.

Within the Sanctum lies the Sanctum Sanctorum, the great library. In this place, the rarest and most dangerous tomes ever created have been stored and catalogued, kept safe and secured.

• The group members include a Mummy, a Vampire, a Swamp Monster, and a few half-demonic heroes. They also have regular human members.

• There have been rumours of connections to shadey Government agencies.

The Shades are a hard group to locate if you are not the kind that they wish to find them. They specialise in the arcane, and so are relatively well connected to the deeper side of the mystical communities. Generally the best you might hope is to let it be known that you wish them to find you.
