On seeing just how nasty the Earth Thorns of the CoT could be, I was determined to create an Earth Controller. Since I was hoping to be immobilising foes, I wanted a secondary set with good debuffs, and so settled on Radiation, since this was energy he could concievably tap from the earth element too.

I really liked the idea of a classic ancient wizard who's powers have kept him young, especially since this would allow me to use my OOC interest in History. I picked him being an officer from the Royal East India company who'd first come across the arcane arts in India as it seemed both unusual and offering rich RP opportunities.

The character was created for a concept that @Romanov and I had been discussing of a neo-supergroup that had existed in and around the First World War time period, and could be somewhat akin to The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, without being either a rip-off, or naff.

[edit] Professional Relationships

Major Paul Stone works extensively with MAGI [1] as an expert in ritual magic from all over the world.

The Guild of Gentlemen Adventurers (aka The Guildsmen), a neo-supergroup from the early 1900s. The Guild was reformed from a couple of what one would losely term surviving members two years ago, but never took formal Super Group status. Its members are typically members of other super groups. The Shades of Darkness was the supergroup that Powerstone, Dead Reckoner, Northern Frost((deleted)) and some few newer recruits happened to belong to outside of The Guildsmen.

Powerstone has been seen several times in the company of the Silent Tempest and is apparently always on call to assist them.

[edit] Personal Relationships

Paul Stone has been seen drinking with Britanic on many occassions in Pocket D, and the two seem to have a warm friendship. Paul was Britanic's best man when he wed White Vampyr in a ceremony also attended by Bastinado and Sword of Redemption, and presided over by The Priest. It is believed that it was his friendship with Britanic that caused Powerstone to be called in to counter-strike against the Rikti under Ben 'Big Lunk' Campbel's infamous MMB mission.

Paul Stone has been often seen in the company of Shadowplay, both in action and socially. He also has been seen sharing drinks with members of Silent Tempest such as Andre 'Coile' Kraft, Dee Dee Diablo, and Sword of Truth. One can conclude from all this that Powerstone likes to drink.

Though rarely seen in public, Paul's oldest and dearest surviving friend is Sir Lionel, the Dead Reckoner. The two often play chess together, either at Sir Lionel's home or at Paul's. Paul is however often seen in the company of Edward Rankin, aka Flame Slinger.

[edit] Personality

Major Paul Stone (retired) was raised in a typically Upper-middle class style as was common for the sons of those who'd settled in the British Colony in India in that time. He is old fashioned in most senses of the term. However, extensive travel and life experience have given Powerstone a very broad mind. He is remarkably stable mentally and emotionally due to his centuries of dedicated study of the Arcane Arts.

He has wisdom, patience, and a deeply spiritual nature that gives him a zenlike status of calm mastery. He is a strong and powerful mentor, though he lost his leadership skills over the many decades of solitude in study and meditation.

[edit] Motivation

Powerstone has learned enough of the arcane and spiritual dimensions to have become engaged n the greatest and longest battles of all those men have undertaken. He is part of the cadre of magicians still fighting against the hostile forces one could aptly term gods, especially those who would use this realm as a mere chessboard for their games, such as the entities of the Banished Pantheon [2], the Oranbegans [3], and the Circle of Thorns [4].

Powerstone works closely with MAGI, and thus also works with Hero Corps [5] and the Federal Bureau of Superpowered Affars (FBSA) on a regular basis. He is a genuinely goodly and kind man, trained as a defender of his nation and people, who has taken that forward into the fight on other planes of understanding. He believes that power automatically comes with the duty to use it for good - Noblesse Oblige.

[edit] Powers

Using the proper time, preparation and ceremonial practices, it is rumoured that Powerstone can perform miracles of magic that are virtually unmatched. Of course, in most circumstances of danger, there is little time to prepare or stand on ceremony.

[edit] Primary Powers

Powerstone's deep affinity with Earth Magic allows him to call upon Earth Control magics as his primary power with but a thought.

[edit] Secondary Powers

Powerstone's research long ago into the power within certain rare and unusual minerals has granted him the ability to use the powers of Radiation Emission to empower his allies or confound his foes.

[edit] Additional Powers

Centuries of dedicated study and meditation have given Powerstone a powerful mind capable of extreme psychic powers with mastery. His mind can be a fortress of strength to resist the holds of others, to shrug off some minor pain, and even to attack other minds with directly.

[edit] Travel

Powerstone has spells that give him great speed to travel across the earth, or indeed to make the earth repel him to enable immense leaps of hundreds of yards.

[edit] Power Pool

Speed Fitness Leaping

[edit] Abilities

Given enough time and materials, Powerstone can create powerful magics for virtually any purpose. He uses his powers carefully and with responsibity. He finds he has a far greater affinity for Earth Magic, and can use these powers with no preparation at all but a moment's concentration.

[edit] Vulnerabilities

Powerstone has the strength and fitness of merely a fit man of mid to late thirties. He is vulnerable to anything that can resist his immense powers for long enough to get close and land just one solid diorienting blow.

[edit] Equipment

Powerstone appears to carry no special equipment notable, although he has been seen to summon a kettle and camp-stove several times to make tea. None have seen precisely where he produces these items from, nor where he replaces them to once finished. This equipment seems to magically appear and disappear at his behest.

At his home, the large Goldstone Mansion, in the mists of Dark Astoria, he posseses all the equipment of a devoted practitioner of the highest arcane arts. His oak-panneled study is filled with tomes and treatises on magic that assist him with his work with M.A.G.I. Other items of particular note in the study are a flawless antique crystal ball, many small enchanted items and mystic crystals, and a stunningly antique chess-set of polished ebony and ivory.

The cellar of the Mansion has been extended, far beneath the earth, and contains a very significant library, thaumatury workshops complete with enchanted forges, and a large, rough chamber that Powerstone calls his 'Cavern of Tranquility' where he goes for transcendental meditation.

The mansion and its grounds are protected with powerful yet subtle wards, one of the most effective of which is a spell that keeps unwanted intrusions away through confusion and misdirection of the will. Any approaching the railings or gates of the mansion who do not have good intention to see Powerstone find that as they approach the gate/fence their objective becomes something else, such as a nearby tree, or a different abode, or the kerb on the other side of the street.

This misdirection ward affects the will, not any actual mind, for it is magical in nature and not confined to physical or scientific determinations of a mind or brain. It was developed to work well against mindless constructs such as the Banished Pantheon's undead, after all.

[edit] Character History

The following history came from Powerstone's own account once passed on to fellows of the Shades of Darkness super group:

My birth occurred far, far away in that lost land we call the past. However, I did most of my growing up in India, where my father worked for the Royal East India Company. I followed the tradition whereby my elder brother learnt my father's business, and I as the youngest went into the millitary. My father and family were just well enough to do that I got a commission as Captain rather swiftly.

However, in real terms in relation to the span of my years, this too was but a childhood. I had eventually become a Major by the time the real maturation process began. My men and I had been posted far to the East of India to deal with civil unrest in the area. It was all to do with some holymen, shamen, and some ancient religion being unhappy.

Not that we took such things lightly. We still recalled the Thuggee, the trained priest-assassins of the Cult of Kali that murdered our soldiers in their sleep in the night. In India, religion is a lot different to the standard church-on-Sunday of the West. It is more fundamental, more spiritual, and far more mystical.

Anyway, to cut a long story down to size, it was my place at a certain time to talk with these shamen in order to keep a peace, or at the least a truce. The British interests in India were there in force, not least the force represented by my men and officers, and it was my task to make these mystics and holy men see reason.

Instead, those shamen showed me what real force truly was. It was a time that many in the West called the Age of Reason, and belief in magic was in huge disfavour then, though not as much so as it would be in the next century. Well, those shamen showed me real bona fide magic. I became a believer very swiftly indeed, reached accord with those powerful shamen, and was drummed straight out of the Army on a medical discharge.

The Shamen were men of honour, and had seen that I was too. They took in Major Paul Stone (retired) at his need to understand more of the mystical world his people had lost. In time, they accepted me as an initiate, a pilgrim on the true path, and helped me take my own first steps into the realm of the mystic arts.

I had withdrawn so far, and for so long, from the people I had once been a part of that I was declared missing and presumed dead. To save my family from the potential disgrace of having a mad son who believed in magic, I let this be the case. It was true in a sense, for my old life was indeed over, and I had been reborn into a new life on a new path.

To say that my studies were long would be to miss the point. A mage has never finished his study of the arcane ways of magic. I am still but a student, although an accomplished one, even to this day. Yet there did come a point where I needed to go out into the world and travel and explore its mystic secrets.

It was during this time that I encountered, and was recruited into, the group known as The Guild of Gentlemen Adventurers. My magic was still very humble back then, but even so I was respected for my abilities. I often accompanied my fellows of the Guild to lands where I might discover other magics, and other paths. I especially enjoyed trips to Africa with my treasure-seeking friend Sir Lionel Trevellian, where I got the chance to study both the Witch Doctor ways, and some of the ancient wonders of lost Egypt.

Oh, it was a time of high adventure, even though I do not speak of it so. It is merely that magic is my adventure these many years, and mundane adventures are just the steps to learning the things that truly excite me. For me, the excitement of learning to slow the aging process within myself was far more of an adventure, and will have far more importance in the true battles against Lughbu and Oranbega, than fighting voodoo zombies, or unravelling ancient curses ever could be.

Yet the next adventure did have a huge impact. There were four of us in Africa at the time. We each had our own adventures to pursue, and went our separate ways to meet up later. The meeting never came, and magically scrying for reasons showed that none of my three comrades were alive. It also told me that one of our own foursome was responsible for the deaths, and that my own demise (an incident I successfully, though barely, avoided) would surely follow if I did not change my plans radically.

It was with heavy heart, and much saddness for the loss of my three companions, that I finally took the journey I had longed for the hardest, and put off the longest - a pilgrimmage back along the ancient spide routes, through Tibet and into China.

It was there I mastered my independance in my arts, and learned to tap into not just the earth power, but the power within certain minerals and elements within the earth such as Uranium and Plutonium. There I have meditated, studied, and waited these many decades awaiting the time I would only know when it came.

When the time was right, I simply felt the mystic tides pulling, and knew that it was time. Time to come to Paragon City. Time to meet the revenant of my old friend Sir Lionel now known as Dead Reckoner. Time to come here, among you, where my powers would at last blossom from the steadfast nurturing of the decades.

There are trials ahead, which can bring such sweet glory. I am pleased with the company in which I shall face them.

[edit] Trivia

The name Powerstone came originally from the way his Indian mentors pronounced his name, Paul Stone. With Paul's talent for Earth Magic, the name seemed appropriate, and was adopted.

Powerstone learned to perform and appreciate the ancient art of the Tea Ceremony as a means to find balance of focus during his years in China with an ancient order of Earth Magi.

Paul Stone has his suits imported from a tailor in Saville Row, London, England. The tailors shop has a history almost as long as his own and their work is impeccable.

Although Stone usually dresses in a smart and contemporary style, favouring suits, he prefers to wear the chinese robes for serious magical work. He claims that this garb helps his mind-set.

Paul always carries a handsome smoking pipe, which he's not often been seen to smoke, but likes to hold in his teeth when in contemplation.

Paul's one guilty pleasure of the modern age is Cable TV. He loves to relax by watching movies of almost any genre. Despite this love for movies, he never visits the cinema, claiming it has never been the same since they took away the girl in the aisles selling drinks and cigars during the intervals.

[edit] Plotmonkey

Powerstone is a recognized authority in regards to the magic of planar travel and other dimensions. He consults with M.A.G.I. regularly in matters of the Circle of Thorns, the Banished Pantheon, and Primordeal Spiritual entities.

He has travelled widely, throughout Asia, Asia Minor, Africa, and even South America, studying the magical arts and histories of all cultures. His knowledge of witchcraft, wizardry, shamanism, and sorcery is exceptionally extensive.

If you have a plot that requires magical knowledge, or an accomplished magus, then Powerstone is easily contacted via M.A.G.I. ((send a message to @ammon reflecting the message you have asked M.A.G.I representatives to pass on))
