You would need to talk to Jason or someone who knows him to discover his history before Paragon City

Someone (I forget who) wrote a series of books about a character named Cain (or Caine, or Cane) who was a fantasy character based on the story of Cane and Able. Jason is my take on that character as usual reflected through my warped brain and the lens of City of Heroes. Essentially he's the 'cursed immortal' archetype, but since I was seriously not into angst when I created him he doesn't follow the usual pattern of "oh ye gods, why have you cursed me to live on as everyone else dies around me."

Contents

[edit] Affiliations

Jason has been associated with various heroes and groups over the years, but is basically a loner. He does have some close ties to the Unity Vigil, having undertaken several missions with them, and is a 'known associate' of Zorielle Rolando.

His greatest enemy is another immortal, Lilith Pendragon. They have alternatively been friends and allies down through the centuries, depending on what mood Jason is in.

In recent times, Jason has been seen several times in the company of Shadow's Grace, another immortal. The two appear to be mainly friends at this time, however.

[edit] Personality

Always on the look out for a new and attractive young woman to oggle, Jason is a fairly happy sort of character, quite open with the fact that he is 8000 years old. He likes using long words, because he can rather than to show off, and dislikes stupid people.

He does have a dark side which, thankfully, no one in Paragon City has ever seen. When he gets depressed, he tends to try to destroy or take over as much of the world as he can manage. This does show in his 'good guy' personality since he can be massively ruthless at times, despite the happy go lucky face he generally puts forward.

His views on immortality tend to cycle depending on his mood, but at this time he has largely come to terms with living forever. He sees each new day as one in which he might meet new people, even if it also means that he may lose some he has known a long time. Clearly, fearing death is pointless to him, but he does always regret the loss of a friend or lover. He tends to be fiercely loyal to those who touch him in some way, as well as a terrible enemy of those who hurt his friends.

[edit] Motivation

Jason's driving motivation is a lingering desire to die and get it over with. In order to do this he must redeem himself in the eyes of the angel who cursed him, and so he has tried many ways of achieving redemption. His latest idea is to become a hero and save people, maybe even the world.

He has long suspected that no one is actually paying any attention to whether he has redeemed himself however. In the past, his falls into depression have resulted in his warlord side coming out, but lately he has started to come to terms with the fact that he is just going to live until the stars burn out.

[edit] Powers

[edit] Primary Powers

Jason uses necromantic powers to draw energy from the Netherworld to enhance his existing martial arts skills. His style is based on Wing Chun, or maybe on some thing that existed thousands of years before Wing Chun was thought of.

[edit] Secondary Powers

Unable to die, Jason's body repairs itself from any amount of damage, given time. Anything short of 'fatal' can be healed very quickly, and he knows a few spells to enhance his natural regeneration if required.

[edit] Additional Powers

[edit] Travel

Jason gets about by public transport and a teleportation spell. He never learned to drive, but he is pretty good at riding a horse.

[edit] Abilities

Necromancy is Jason's big thing, though he does know a fair bit about magic in general, and a little more of the specifics of demonology. He has demonstrated the ability to summon up the spirits of the dead, and has travelled to Hell (and back) seeking information regarding an ancient goddess. He knows a fair number of demons by name.

[edit] Vulnerabilities

Nothing can kill Jason permanently, but he can be put out of action for weeks at a time if you blast him with something big enough. Overwhelming damage will overcome his regeneration and 'kill' him for anything between a few seconds and several hours, depending on the damage taken.

[edit] Equipment

Jason has a lot of books and such, but generally does not bother with much in the way of equipment.

Resource-wise, Jason has access to as much money as he could ever need. 8000 years of compound interest can turn even a penny into a vast fortune.

[edit] Character History

[edit] Pre-history

Around 8000 years ago, maybe a bit more, maybe a bit less, a young man was born to the leader of a village in the Mongolian Steppes. He grew up learning to fight and become the leader of his people, but his younger brother wanted that 'kingship' of the city for himself and set about turning their farther against the older son. It worked, and on the king's death, the younger son was named king. Realising that the older boy presented a threat, the new king turned the whole tribe against him. Beaten near to death, he was cast out into the wilderness to die.

Instead, he was picked up by wandering rogues as a slave. Three years later, he had become their leader, and increased their manpower by a factor of five. He came back to his home village and slaughtered every last man, woman and child. Unfortunately for him, an 'angel' happened to be passing, perhaps drawn by the prayers of the dying, perhaps just killing time. Seeing the slaughter and the mad glee which had caused it, the angel cursed the young prince to live on forever until he redeemed himself for all the deaths, especially that of his brother which was particularly vicious.

Of course, at the time this really did not bother the man who was to become Jason Caine. He forged himself a kingdom in proto-China, which was where Lilith Pendragon found him and trained him in necromancy.

After some time, Jason began to realise that maybe living forever was not the greatest thing in the world, and began his cycle of attempts to gain redemption and rage against the unfeeling universe which keeps him alive, no matter what.

[edit] More recent History

Around about 1820, a man calling himself Johanus Kahn was busily forging himself a small criminal empire based on slave labour and highway robbery in the general area of Bavaria. He was falsely called to a meeting with an ally, only to discover it was a trap laid by someone who knew exactly what he was and apparently wanted him out of the way. Explosives dropped several hundred tonnes of rock from a cliff face onto him, trapping him. He spent the next century or so trapped beneath the rock, unable to free himself, and went quite mad.

He was finally dug out by miners searching for a coal seam in 1932, which was a shame for the miners since he had gone stark raving mad. Everyone in a two mile radius died within about 48 hours before the madman ran off into the woods and vanished.

Barrington Club records (for anyone able to access them, a very rare few) show that a sane man baring the name Kane Barlow showed up just after World War Two to reclaim his room there without question.

Jason Caine turned up in Paragon City in 2006 looking to become a hero. He was somewhat out of practice with magic and martial arts, but made a name for himself as an expert necromancer and competent combatant. Avoiding weapons which might kill anyone, he is once again seeking redemption for his past crimes. He discovered and hooked up with another immortal named Shadow's Grace.

Latterly, he has been working as a lecturer at the Paragon City University branch in Salamanca as well as working with the Midnighters as an archivist, researcher, consultant and general troubleshooter.

[edit] Trivia

Jason was a founder member of the Barrington Club in 1680. The Barrington Club is a place where weird people can hang out with other weird people and currently has its premises in Soho, London. Jason has his own room, number 24, which he uses as a home whenever he is in the UK.
