Doctor Bolt is my first CoH character (I'm painfully new) and my first attempt at CoX RP. I think I'm relatively experienced in RP, having played on the Earthen Ring RP server on WoW until recently. A short description of Bolt would be the brainchild of Einstein, Iron Man and the eccentric, easy-going old man stereotype.

I've said it before in game and I'll say it here. BOLT IS HORRIBLY UNDERPLAYED. I've had him since around September 07 and he's still level 11 :P.

Bolt is mainly used for random bouts of lighthearted RP these days.

Contents

[edit] Affiliations

Bolt has no affiliations as of present day.

[edit] Personality

Bolt is generally outgoing and friendly, and often speaks in a polite, well-educated manner. Prone to random bouts of hyperactivity and depression on occasion. Aside from this he has lots of repressed emotion from his lowly job as a lab technician and will often cackle madly in combat as he releases his anger. He also has an insatiable curiousity where machinery is involved. Also regards Clockwork with disappointment (such a waste of robotics, he thinks), Vahzilok with disgust (use your head) and all sorts of mafia and street gangs with outright hate, particularly the Tsoo. In fact, when criminality becomes involved, he tends to have a complete personality shift from eccentric scientist to vicious, brutal fighter.

Bolt can also handle his beer extremely well, but when he finally gets drunk he goes a bit crazy. He also expresses a love for various "retro" things, such as Pong, Techno music, and the Tom Baker run of Doctor Who (and is eternally grateful to the Sword of Redemption, who gave him the full run of it on VHS)

[edit] Motivation

To make the world a better place, he says. To be bluntly honest with himself, Bolt couldn't give a damn about the world at the moment. He's driven by revenge against the Tsoo and criminal gangs in general for the death of his younger brother, Daniel. Other than that he needs something to take his built-up repressed emotions (mainly negative ones) from various tragedies in his life out on, and he sees beating up young punks, robots, zombies, etc. to be ideal. Despite his happy exterior, Bolt is a cold and ruthless man and it is apparent in the way he deals with crime.

[edit] Powers

Bolt's powers are solely derived from his battlesuit, which consists of steel armoured plating, servomotors, dynamos and other creations of techno-goodness. Most notably, however, is its ability to project and manipulate electrical energy.

[edit] Primary Powers

Through his electrical generators, Bolt can produce and project electricity of various voltage and wattage. These "bolts", which he completely coincidently shares a name with are typically classified under four things; annoying, painful, incapacitating and lethal. A pressure pad, located on the palm of the gauntlets, powers up the generators. The longer the pressure pad is held down, the more powerful the projected bolt will be. The bolt is then discharged by releasing the pads.

[edit] Secondary Powers

Electrical manipulation/melee. Through means unknown to even Bolt himself, the suit can meld electricity into loose shapes like malleable putty. He can do this to form cages and the like, and simply just hold his generators down for electrified punches.

[edit] Travel

The gloves and boots of Bolt's powered armour have anti-gravitic motors which allow him flight at rudimentary speeds.

[edit] Other Powers

The servos in Bolt's suit give his punches and kick an extra "oomph".

[edit] Abilities

Most notably, Bolt has his extensive knowledge of SCIENCE! with a capital S at his side. His intellect is almost genius-level. Aside from that he's quite handy with most kinds of manual and power tools, and can perform maintenance and repairs on mechanical constructs with surprising speed. Can also play the violin and cello, but rarely does so. He is also adept at Muay Thai and Krav Maga, which allows him hand-to-hand combat (if it is a little weak and amateurish)

Bolt's tendency to pull off completely unlikely things might also be notable as an ability.

[edit] Vulnerabilities

Bolt's main weakness is his near-complete reliance on his battlesuit. Without it he's just a normal human being. His suit as it is is also quite prone to malfunction at the wrong moments.

[edit] Equipment

His suit. It can generate and control electricity, fly, has built-in radar, radio and targeting functions and also has a convenient wrist-mounted PDA on the left arm which he sends emails with.

[edit] Character History

Michael J. Bolt lived a relatively normal life, albeit one which displayed startling intelligence in his youth. He could outperform an 11-year-old in a timed arithmatic test, write long articles with expansive vocabulary and conduct controlled scientific experiments with ease at the age of 7. As such he was taken into private schooling till secondary school.

During his first year, however, he became involved in the 80s "skinhead" culture and was too busy talking to his mates and messing about than doing work, so his grades dropped. However, by the time he was in his early teens (14 or so), he noticed more and more skinhead gangs were becoming racist and right-wing and left the culture behind, becoming a little nerd once more. Doing this secured him excellent GSCEs but also earned him the hate of his former gang, so for Michael's safety his parents moved to London.

He returned to his home to study in Cambridge University and stay in the on-campus dorms, where he met several of his old friends from school, including some of his ex-gangmates who seemed to have dropped the grudge thankfully. Unfortunately, however, he managed to anger a japanese exchange student by acting like an "incompetent know-it-all". This student dropped out and returned to Japan weeks later. On the plus-side, however, he met a girl called Kathy Raimes (a daughter of a british superhero herself) and fell in love with her. This relationship continued after graduation, and they were regularly commented to be the perfect couple.

[edit] Japan, and the death of Daniel Bolt

Five years in to the relationship when Bolt was 24, disaster struck when it should have been happiness all around. Kathy was nine months pregnant with Michael's child when she went into labour one afternoon. Bolt rushed her to hospital as fast as he could, but due to an incorrect dosage of morphine, Kathy overdosed and died, taking the baby with her. Bolt was griefstricken and tried to block the memories out of his mind. As such he doesn't seem to remember the whole ordeal unless asked specifically, these days.

To help him get it off his mind he decided to take his younger brother, Danny to Japan during his summer holidays. Danny had always said that he had wanted to go to Japan, and Bolt thought it'd be the perfect treat for the lad. Using money from his healthy wage at Franklin Industries, the robotics company he worked for, he got a first-class flight for two to Tokyo and booked into a five-star hotel.

Walking back to the hotel with Danny one night, Bolt attracted the attention of two-shady looking Japanese men. These two revealed themselves to be of the Tsoo, and one of them, conviniently enough, was the japanese exchange student he ticked off at uni. He saw this as the perfect opportunity to get rid of Bolt, despite the two having not had contact for several years, and went to strike at him, but Danny, being a typical teenager at the time, launched himself at the two Tsoo and tried to fight. Bolt, pertrified with fear, ran as fast as he could, hardly realising he had doomed his brother to die until he had got back to the hotel.

[edit] SCIENCE!

Bolt returned home and told his parents that Danny had fell off a cliff as a convinient coverstory, rather than expose his guilt. His mother and father, in a rage at how bluntly Bolt had told the two, especially with such grave (albeit fake) news, threw him out on the streets. With nothing left to loose, Bolt began to focus on his job at Franklin, as he saw it as the only purpose in his life. He spent his days at work, gladly taking extra shifts, and his nights at the pub, getting drunk. At this time he became an avid fan of West Ham United, and is to this day and during the Rikti War he earned mild infamy through London by killing a Rikti trooper who had strayed too close to his flat with a fire extinguisher.

He formed a strong friendship with his company's CEO, Craig Franklin. The two were both intelligent, loved football and basically just adored science. On more than one occasion they went to see West Ham play together, went to the pub afterwards, walked home drunkenly from the pub singing off-key. So close that Craig promoted Bolt to the technical supervisor and lab technician to some high-priority robotics designs. But he still kept his new best friend in the dark about the most important projects, however.

One night, having decided that Bolt was trusted enough to know about one of the lighter projects, Bolt was assigned to repair a remotely jammed door (Franklin suspected hackers) to a top-secret lab. Franklin however forgot to deactivate the security systems and the moment Bolt opened the door a turret shot at him. Bolt fled, terrified, and went home early for the first time ever.

One night, however, using the same trick he used to open the lab door, Bolt broke into the factory out of his insatitable curiousity. Skillfully avoiding the turret fire, he got into the lab he was assigned to reopen which contained a meager life-sized fully operational robotic dog, which licked him with a dry, rubber tongue and let out synthesised barks. As luck would have it, he found a secret door behind one of the computer systems in the lab which led to something much more exciting.

[edit] "Check out the new gear, mate!"

Bolt had uncovered a fully mechanized suit outfitted with targetting systems and radio in the helmet, anti-gravity propulsion engines in the boots and most curiously, powerful electricity generators. Having read through documents on it, he found that it was being funded by both the U.S. and the U.K. governments, for usage in the War in Afghanistan. However, with the funds, it seemed Franklin planned to rip off the governments and sell it to people who offered much more; terrorists. (He later learned that this random band of insurgents were just a scapegoat for the real buyers, Arachnos, but oh well!)

Bolt was shocked. After reading through blueprints on the prototype armour to learn how it worked internally and how to operate it, he donned the suit and unfortunately triggered alarms. He ended up short circuiting most of the defenses, including computer-controlled robots, more turrets and the robot dog from earlier (who had a reality disruptor cannon built into its hind legs). Craig Franklin arrived with armed security teams just as Bolt made his way out, and with an infuriating cry of "Check out the new gear, mate!" he soared off into the sky, avoiding gunfire and angry shouts claiming betrayal.

This was all in early August. Having moved to a securer location for his own safety and hiding out, he stayed until the 23rd or so until he read about how asian gangs were spreading to the states rapidly on the web. He picked up the name "Tsoo" on the list of known gangs and, remembering Danny, flipped. Immediately, he made his way to Paragon City with his new suit, ready to blow the Tsoo off the face of the earth through high voltage, cheesy wisecracks and above all SCIENCE!

[edit] Recent History

Bolt arrived in Paragon quite in September 07. After hearing about the Galaxy Girl statue and the amazing phenomena of a group of heroes gathering under the girl's skirt, he arrived quite uneventfully and was immediately shot at by invading Rikti as he approached the statue. Similar occurances happened the next time he attended.

Most startling of his activities in Paragon City was the creation of the feline-human hybrid codenamed Kat Kommando, affectionately called Lester by Bolt (he claims that this is the cat's legal name, and it stuck anyway; however, there is reason for his choice of names). The cat is used and abused as a guinea pig for Bolt's various inventions. It seems remarkably resilient and eerilly intelligent, and it's definately strange for someone who just scraped his doctorate in robotics to be able to produce a bioengineered weapon of annoyance.

He has became something of a recluse, only leaving his apartment every now and then to get groceries, electrocute some suckas or sell extremely dangerous weapons to various acquaintances. Most recently, he sold approximately 500 coilguns to Serafine; however, when she insisted that she asked for only six (Bolt scoffed at this), he promptly gave a good 494 to Fire Singer. He's either building these or getting them from an outside source; but where is he getting the money?

Bolt has recently started his own company, BoltCo.

[edit] Trivia

  • Bolt is, in fact, a real surname. I found it appropriate.
  • Bolt's childhood teddy bear was called Lester. He kept hold of it for many years simply for the nostalgia, but it was destroyed in the first Rikti War.
  • He seriously hates Rikti for the above reason.
  • The "Rogue Scientist" element of Bolt is because all these powersuited heroes seem to be multi-millionaire corporation owners. I thought it'd be a laugh if I had a robbing git instead. :P
