[edit] Affiliations
- Leader of the Militia.
- Close friends with White Vampyr, Cindersnap and Amber Banshee.
- Land lord to residents of Swallowtail House
[edit] Personality
Jay is loyal and caring, but this is often hidden behind a formally polite exterior with people he doesn't know well. He loves being a hero, but also carries a great deal of guilt for the people he feels he has let down in the past. He is often lonely, and sees his friends as an extended family that he needs to support, although he doesn't often ask for that same suport in return. Stubborn would be another word to describe that part of him.
In combat as the Crimson Archer, Jay tends to be focused and professional, although this can lead him to getting angry if things don't go as planned.
As a trained hunter, Jay is capable of killing and is very much aware of that cold part of himself, but chooses not to indulge it.
[edit] Motivation
On the surface Jay Reynolds is The Crimson Archer because he loves adventure and excitement, and because he wants to inspire "ordinary" people by being an ordinary person who does extraordinary things.
However, underneath it all is guilt. Jay feels responcible for the death of his cousin, Madelin, who had bi-polar disorder and who died in a car accident which she caused. He also blames himself for the recent murder of Madison's brother, Mal, also known as the hero Redsight. As The Crimson Archer, Jay seeks redemption for these deaths, and for the people he feels that he fails to help by being just one man.

[edit] Abilities
Jay is a human in the peak of physical fitness. He trains himself regularly with acrobatics, gymnatics, weights training, and other athletic/aerobic activities. He is a keen freerunner, which helps him both with his physical training and with getting to know the best way to move around the city without superhuman powers.
He is a superb archer, trained by his Father in bow hunter and field archery from an early age. Due to a recent training by a Tsoo assassin, and a possible minor mutation (currently unconfirmed), Jay appears to have almost perfect aim with any weapon thrown, or self propelled. This ability does not appear to extend to firearms, although this may just be a mental block on Jay's part.
In addition to the above, Jay is a good mechanic, especially with regards to cars and their repair. Having grown up in and around his Father's garage business, he has the knowledge of a well trained mechanic.
[edit] Vulnerabilities
The Crimson Archer is human, and as such has all the frailties and weaknesses that comes with it. He has no specific "power based" vulnerabilities.
[edit] Equipment
.Custom built tech-bow, can automatically fold into a smaller size for storage in a thigh mounted holster.
Concealed quiver in the back of his armoured jacket, which holds standard arrows and "blazing" custom arrows.
Various trick arrow heads, which are held in belt pouches and dispensers hidden in his costume and can be affixed to his standard arrows.
Utility belt, which holds a miniature tool kit, monocular sight with night vision and digital camera facility, PPD custodial teleport tagger, various pieces of identification, mini cellphone, and a notebook & pencil.
[edit] Character Origin
Jay was born in a trailer park to Maria & Bobby Reynolds. His Pa had been invalided out of the military and Jay grew up following his Pa around, whether it was working in his small town garage or going out hunting. His Pa prefered to use rifles, but Jay showed an aptitude for bow hunter from an early age. Bobby, who's own talents lay in electronics & mechanical engineering, made his son a special bow for his seventh birthday, and has made him a new one every year since.
When Jay was 12, his baby sister Chelsea was born, an accidental pregnancy which was taken as a blessing, but which ended in tragedy. Maria died in child birth, and Bobby was left to bring up his son & baby daughter on his own. Due to his Father's alcoholism, Jay did what he could to help his Pa, and became a caring young man, but his escape from his routine of schooling and childcare were his comic books. Jay grew up loving the Manitcore comics which chronicled his favourite bowman hero. Later as a young man he emulated his hero how he could. He practised with his bows until his fingers bled. He took up body building, and one of his friends introduced him to Parkour or Freerunning, and suddenly he was an urban spirit running free! But as always, he had to return the trailer park, his Pa, and his sister.
Chelsea grew up different. A child genius, Jay & his Pa did what they could to keep her entertained, but they couldn't afford the fees to send her to special school they knew she needed. All that changed one evening when they were playing the lottery, like so many dreamers in trailer parks across the US. But unlike so many shattered dreams before, their numbers came up... all of them.
Suddenly sitting on a multiple million dollar fortune, their dreams could be realised. Chelsea was able to go to the special school she needed. Bobby has a bigger garage and builds hotrods (amongst other things that his talented daughter sends him blueprints!). And Jay, with his Pa's blessing, moved to Paragon City and became the hero of his own childhood games, The Crimson Archer!
[edit] Recent History
Following the mental breakdown of The Militia Leader, Force Commander, Jay (having been given promotion to Field Commander) was forced to lead a team to track down and apprehend the errant mentalist. During the chase, the team were lead to Bloody Bay, where Jay encountered the meteors there. The radiation emissions caused Jay's body to exhibit abilities previously unknown to the archer, and following many tests by G.I.F.T. doctors and scientists, it was decided that Jay had a latent mutation which only activated when an external catalyst (in this case, the radiation of the meterors) was present. This shook Jay's belief that he was "just human" (unlike his mutant sister), and he started to make infrequent use of an inhaler containing atomised Bloody Bay meteor dust to boost his physical abilities.
Follwing this, Jay started to spend more time as Crimson Archer acting seperately from The Militia, operating mostly in Croatoa and Salamanca, and was to be seen only rarely in Militia teams. However, when he was around, Jay was finding time to assist with the training of younger heroes.
Throughout this time, Jay was having to contend with an ongoing court action which was brought against his use of the Crimson Archer name and appearance. A man by the name of Herbert Vraney claimed to be the "original" Crimson Archer, a supervillian during the 1950s, and that he had copyright and trademark claims on the use of that name. Following a court hearing, where Jay was represented by his cousin, Nathan Manson, this was settled, with Vraney's claim being proved to be false, and that the Crimson Archer name actually resided with Raymond Free Press Group, a publishing company which owns the Paragon Herald, as well as a number of other magazines and newspapers. Following this, Jay has been allowed to continue using the Crimson Archer name and image, providing that he gives them exclusive interviews and content for their publications. To this end, he has appeared in a "racy" shirt-less photo shoot and interview for the gay magazine, Paragon Pride, which lead to Jay's gay celebrity status being further confirmed in the public eye.
When Jay's The Militia team-mate, Amber Banshee, was kidnapped during her solo investigation into the murder of vigilante hero Nightsparrow. Jay lead a team which consisted of members from both The Militia and Silent Tempest to rescue her. During this mission Jay's quick temper and mood swings (caused by over use of the meteor dust catalyst) caused some dissention amongst the team, and eventually lead to the death of fellow heroes, Redsight and Dante Carver. During the same mission, Jay's left eye was burnt from its socket, leaving him with a ugly wound and the loss of his aim. Fortunately, despite the complications and losses, Amber Banshee was finally rescued.
After this rescue, Jay to admitted to himself that his obsessive seeking to rescue Amber Banshee, which had put so many people in danger, and killed his team mates, was due to his own unrecognised love for her. This was in contrast to his confirmed status as a gay man, and lead him to need some time to reconcile his feelings. After time spent in hospital, Jay took temporary leave from The Militia. The loss of his eye had affected his aim to such a degree that he felt unable to continue as The Crimson Archer, and questioned whether to hang up his bow for good. Following the funeral of his cousin, Mal (the hero, Redsight), Jay's sister, Chelsea, informed him that she thought he had a touch of thier mother's own mutant mental abilities (which Chelsea had inherited fully), and it was these, and not his sight, which caused him to be a great archer. Even more unsure of himself and his confidence in his natural abilities shaken, Jay returned to Paragon City determined to find out more about his mother's past and whether he was also a mutant.
Upon his return, Jay was attacked by a Tsoo assassin, named Lotus Dragon, in retaliation for the thwarting of their plan to take control of all the gangs in Paragon City some months earlier. The assassin, depsite a clear shot, refused to kill Jay as his injury preventing him from being a true warrior, and therefore was not an honorable kill. Instead, Lotus Dragon offered to re-train Jay as an archer and a warrior, so that the assassin could eventually kill him with honor. Jay accepted the offer, and after four nights of intensive training and Tsoo tattoing, Lotus Dragon felt Jay was worthy of an honorable death. The duel was short and swift, ending with the Tsoo assassin lying dead at Jay's feet, a crimson shafted arrow protruding from his left eye. It was on this same night that the second Rikti invasion began.
Jay, having regained his ability to be an archer, took to the streets to hunt the Rikti as The Crimson Archer once again. During this time, Jay rediscovered his love for the hunt, and also his hunter's desire to kill. Unsure whether this was due to some trick by Lotus Dragon, Jay was left feeling the need to redefine himself as a hero, and to atone for the mistakes he had made during the earlier months. Jay quit The Militia, handed leadership over to Britanic, left his apartment in Swallowtail House and took to the city streets as a solo hero once more.
After several months living on the streets and roof tops of Paragon City as a borderline vigilante, Jay's resembelence to the hero he once was was distant. His Crimson Archer uniform was patched, scuffed and dirty. His once trimmed goatee beard had become a shaggy mess. His encounters with other heroes lead to most commenting on his change of appearnce and near obsessive behaviour in trying to save anyone and everyone he came across in trouble, while barely stopping to eat, rest or sleep. It was when Jay eventually encountered Love Angel that things changed once again for the hero. Jay gave Love Angel a letter he had written many weeks before, a personal note giving her his reasons for his behaviour during the resue of Amber Banshee, and confessing her love for the woman. Despite the personal tragedy which that mission cost Love Angel, she chose to forgive Jay providing that he find a way to "heal" himself.
Soon after Jay became involved in an investigation in to the re-emergence of Nemesis, and their use of automaton office workers to take over businesses in the city. The investigation soon became more than Jay could handle alone, and approached his old friends from The Militia for assistance. During his absense, the group which had been disbanded by Wayne industries, although many of the heroes had continued to work together, and were willing to help.
During one such mission, when Jay was teaming with Amber Banshee, to whom he had confessed his love several weeks earlier and their relationship had been rocky at best since then, she began calling him "Mountain man", at which Jay was convinced to change his image once again.
As serendipity would have it, at the same time Jay was approached by Raymond Free Press Group to attend a meeting to discuss a business opportunity which had been presented to the company by ActionBiz, a toy and collectibles manufacturer. It transpired that The Crimson Archer was to be turned into a range of action figures, and Jay's approval of the proposed costumes (as well as his agreement to wear matching costumes on the streets to help marketability) was being sought. Despite misgivings, and with the comments of Amber Banshee firmly in his mind, Jay agreed.
With three action figures released in the first wave (Urban Defender Crimson Archer, Night Hunter Crimson Archer and Armoured Assault Crimson Archer), Jay is currently wearing a variation on the Urban Defender action figure costume, and is working with The Militia once again, as it has been reformed by Amber Banshee and Britanic, with a new base in King's Row; The Dugout.
Following a raid on a Rikti base, Jay suffered several broken ribs and a punctured lung, for which he was treated at an infirmary within the Vanguard compound. While recouperating for 24 hours, Jay spent his time thinking whether it was possible for a non-powered human to be a hero in the same league as those with "super powers". Upon being transfered to a civilian hospital, Jay discharged himself and returned to the streets. Less than a week later, he found himself in need of medical attention again, when his wounds meant he was overpowered by Council soldiers. This time his doctors told him he would have to take at least a month off, or face permanent injury.
[edit] Additional Information
Jay is the landlord of SwallowTail House, Talos Island, which is run as rented accomodation as part of the FBSA's Superhero Housing Scheme. The building is actually owned by The SwallowTail Trust, a trust set up by Jay's Father, Bobby, after Jay spoke to him about the problems in Paragon City with finding housing for newer heroes, or those superhumans who have fallen on hard times.
The buildings are converted and renovated by Hero Habitats, a company which specialises in building supergroup bases and superhero accomodation. They are a fully FBSA approved business.
