Cindersnap
From Handbook of the Union Universe
I just kind of made a fire blaster one day, and things grew from there, the MYRS project, other things... and now Cindersnap is one of my favourite characters, and somehow has come a long way from his beginings to be the leader of a group of young metahumans, in a steady relationship, and with a group of friends to boot!- @Zortel

[edit] Personality
Ryan is a very kind young man, confident in himself and possessing quite remarkable charisma and energy. He cares deeply for all the members of the New Vigilants, and is always eager to be a casual, approachable leader who people can relax around and open up to. While he can be rather flirtatious and leading with women, he's always quick to inform them that nothing will happen for various reasons, the main one being his growing relationship with Robert Judge, son of Televangelist and ultra conservative TV personality Gary Judge.
Those who cross him or hurt those he's protecting will face the cool wrath of a well trained and extensively practiced mutant. He's also a bit of a workaholic. He'd prefer you say 'dedicated' though.
[edit] Motivation
Ryan made mistakes in his past, and some of those made him end up in Youth Detention Centre. He regrets these deeply and now that he's had the chance to get his life back on track thanks for the MYRS project and time with the Unity Vigil, is determined into investing his energies into the New Vigilants to help others get that chance.
[edit] Powers
Ryan is Pyrokinetic, allowing him to combust and ignite the air around him by accelerating the molecules of it. He can then project this fire in blasts. He is also pyromorphic, and has some measure of control over the shape and way fires burn. He is also capable of running at great speeds, his fastest recorded movement currently being 201 mph.
[edit] Fire Blast
Cindersnap's main form of attack is unleashing blasts of fire from his hands, and he can also boost the intensity of them for a short period of time.
[edit] Fire Manipulation
Cindersnap can further boost the intensity of his blasts, as well as using his pyromorphic abilties to create, contain and shape fire, as well as creating a powerful blade of fire.
[edit] Defiance
As he uses his abilities in battle, they come more and more naturally to him, causing them to burn more intensely if he wishes.
[edit] Abilities
As well as having information on some of Paragon City's gangs due to his time in them, Ryan is also fluent in American Sign Language. His extensive training with the Unity Vigil and New Vigilants have brought him a range of talents, perfect for use in the field in most of the situations a hero may come across.
[edit] Vulnerabilities
Apart from his mutation, Ryan is a pretty normal boy, and as such has vunerabilities to most things that humans do. Water is not especially effective against him, seeing as the way he ignites his powers means that even if wet, he can cause ignition, though the flames will be weaker.
[edit] Equipment
Apart from his costume, one of the standard New Vigilant Uniforms, Ryan has been fitted with Mark 3 Unity Vigil Wetware cybernetics, including Retinal HUD terminals, an internal computer system, subvocal commslinks and built in internet and GPS access.
[edit] Character History
Ryan Andrews was born to deaf parents, while he and his brother, 2 years his junior, were able to hear. As he grew up, he learnt both English and American Sign Language, and often did interpreting for his parents when he was out, even at parent evenings at school and other such events.
Tragedy struck in 2003, when his parents couldn't hear the calls and the sound of a horn to get out of the way when a truck went out of control and collided with them, killing them both and leaving Ryan and his brother in state care.
Or so that was how it was supposed to be.
The brothers, Ryan mostly, went slightly off the rails, getting involved in gangs and other shady things. And Dyne too. An undiagnosed heart condition rose when his brother first tried it though, and in that stupid mistake of trying something they'd always been warned about in school, Ryan lost the only other member of his family. Sworn off Dyne forever and having an intense hatred of those who deal with it, Ryan joined the Outcasts with his newly awakened Pyrokinetic abilities, and as well as fighting against the Skulls and Trolls, commited various other crimes, that eventually got him put into Youth Detention Centre.
His luck and life were about to change though, when he was recruited for the Metahuman Youth Reformation Scheme, and assigned to the newly formed Unity Vigil. Making friends, good friends, for the first time in his recent life, he worked hard in his training and his heroing, showing the effectiveness of the scheme for some young offenders, and has recently come up for parole, where should it be granted, he'd be free of the project and able to become a full member of the Unity Vigil.
In the Second Rikti Invasion, Ryan sustained a fairly heavy injury in the first attack on Unity Tower, the scar of the Rikti Warblade remaining on his right side of his stomach to this day. After this, his training stepped up, including tutelage from Long SnowFlame and Crimson Archer, who he later grew close with and developed a crush on, though nothing became of it.
Later on, he sustained more injuries in a fight against a cyborg assassin sent to eliminate Zorielle Rolando, hospitalizing him for several weeks. He went on to make a full recovery and got back into heroing, but he felt he was not making a difference as he should. Heading to see Zorielle, he asked for a challenge.
She gave him Vigilance Tower, a budget, and the task of taking on students to train them in how to use their powers and, if they wished, to become heroes with the skills they needed. Ryan thought about this, and possibly foolishly said yes, but apart from some slight issues with delegation and being too attached to his work, he's shouldered the burden of responsibility, learned to carry it, and then ran with it. The New Vigilants, as the group became called, is currently flourishing with over one hundred and fourty seven students.
Ryan began seeing Robert Judge after exchanging mail with him, the young man becoming somewhat a fan after Ryan rescued him from a Freak attack on a school trip. The two became firm friends, and soon feeling began to blossom between the pair. Despite one break up after Robert's reluctance to come out, the pair soon began dating on Ryan's 18th birthday, and Robert confronted his father. There's somewhat of an uneasy truce between Ryan and Gary Judge, but who knows when Robert's father may take a stand.
Robert is responsible for Ryan's renewed belief in the Christian church, and the pair attend an alternate-lifestyle accepting congregation in Steel Canyon on Sunday Mornings.
[edit] Trivia
