Originally a scientist at the Polaxis institute, Alex East was given the nickname "Sunny" because of his work with photon particles and his cheery disposition. In an accident involved a particle accelerator, Alex aquired super powers. Now with the ability to absorb photon particles and fire them as energy projectiles, Captain Sunshine also appears to brightly glow with light.

When entering battle, likes to shout "Today the sun shines on Justice!". This corny line is assumed to be tongue-in-cheek. Often heard to say "remarkable" when surprised or intrigued.
