[edit] Personality

[edit] Emily West

Blaze's rebinding spell, and the sudden shock of becoming aware of Blaze's true nature have caused a dramatic shift in Emily's personality. Following the death of her parents, she had become somewhat depressed and apathetic, unable or unwilling to turn her talents to any useful task. Now, however, her old self has returned.

Usually friendly, often excitable, Emily can be mistaken for someone who doesn't take anything seriously. When she sets her mind to a task, however, her iron will and unbreakable resolve kick in, and she will pursue her goals with a drive and passion that can leave her looking distinctly singleminded.

[edit] Buccaneer Blaze

Generally detached from most ordinary people, and even many heroes, Blaze has withdrawn into her own mind and rarely speaks unless spoken to. Her demon side gives her somewhat aggressive tendancies, and her preferable solution to a problem involves violence. She is, however, able to contain these tendencies when on patrol, and avoids needless killing. Since Emily is refusing to surface, Blaze has been left without a host personality when she is off duty, and so is struggling to understand the nuances of social interaction. In particular, when confronted by newcomers, she tends towards either total apathy, or unwarranted aggression, making it difficult for her to make friends.

Blaze can also suffer sudden, and dramatic, mood changes. Since the mixed components of her mind alter her mood to an extent, the waxing and waning of the demon's interest in what is happening can cause her to suddenly become aggressive, or to calm down for no apparent reason.

[edit] Motivation

[edit] Emily West

Emily is motivated by her desire to rebuild her life. Having let herself go after the death of her parents, she now wants to start again, and she sees Blaze as the way to do that.

[edit] Buccaneer Blaze

Blaze's motivation comes from the various personalities she has been bound to over the years. Since many of her previous hosts have been heroes, fighting crime comes naturally to her, and if she had no hero licence, it is doubtful she would know what to do with herself.

More recently, she has lost many of her memories. Understandably concerned, she is seeking out answers, and is willing to do whatever it takes to find out what happened, and why.

[edit] Fiery Aura

Blaze's demon side gives her some control over fire. She can use it to shield herself from harm, and even to heal or revitalise herself.

[edit] Dual Blades

Blaze has extensive martial skill with her blades, gained from practice throughout previous incarnations.

[edit] Additional Powers

[edit] Leaping

Blaze has magically enhanced a pair of low-tech jumping boots, allowing her to easily leap over buildings. She also benefits from years of experience and training, allowing her to hold her ground easily, and avoid many attacks, while avoiding being pinned in place.

[edit] Fitness

The demon's regenerative capabilities have been partially bestowed upon Emily, allowing her to heal and recover her stamina much faster than a normal person.

[edit] Stealth

Blaze is able to store solid objects inside her bracelet, and has figured out how to partially transfer herself in. Being partially insubstantial makes her more difficult to see, and provides a measure of protection against her enemies.

[edit] Vulnerabilities

Though her armour is invulnerable, Blaze has a weakness. Her own blades are enchanted in a way that allows them to pass through her armour as though it were not present. In addition, the blades will not only cause physical harm, but will cut through her spirit as well, injuring Blaze herself, not just the host's body.

Her bracelet is both her greatest strength, and strongest weakness. When the host body dies, Blaze is drawn back into the bracelet, where she remains, unharmed, until a new host uses the bracelet and reawakens her. While she is inside, the bracelet is apparently invulnerable, but while she is possessing a host, the bracelet can be destroyed. If this were to happen, Blaze would die with her host.

[edit] Equipment

Blaze has a set of magical armour that she can reshape at will to alter her appearance. It is invulnerable, making it impossible for blades or bullets to pass through. However, it cannot stop physical impacts, and so she still suffers bruising and even broken bones, and other injuries, if hit hard enough. In addition, the armour does not stop non-physical forms of damage, such as energy or fire.

She also possesses two enchanted swords. Strong enough to cut into most armour, and able to harm both physical and spirit beings, they are her primary weapons against her enemies. When not in use, they simply vanish, and she can recall them with an effort of will if they are within a few metres.

Over the course of her career, Blaze has acquired a growing collection of equipment, given to her either to help with missions or as thanks for tasks she has completed. She has a raptor flight pack and an anti-gravity pack, given to her by the PPD for her help in securing the city's banks. She also has an assault rifle and some beanbag rounds which she confiscated from a group who had stolen a weapons shipment. Recently she has acquired some holy shotgun shells for the rifle during her posting to Striga Isle. A pair of cryoprojection bracers and a suit of cryonite armour fill out a hole in her capabilities where cold is concerned, and she has some EMP grenades for taking out Council robots, and which she has also found useful against the Freaks. Finally, she has a bow, which she acquired in Croatoa.

[edit] Emily West

Born in Paragon City, Emily was just an ordinary girl, destined for an ordinary life. Growing up amongst heroes, she always dreamed of being one of them, but lacked any special abilities to make her dreams come true. Instead, she decided to follow in her father's footsteps, and join the PPD. All this changed in 2002, with the Rikti Invasion.

Fleeing from the devestation, the group of survivors Emily and her mother were with was caught by Rikti soldiers. Her mother was killed, and Emily was injured. She survived only thanks to a hero, who was described by witnesses as "a pillar of flame, cutting through the Rikti with a flash of steel, and no regard for her own safety". After reaching safety, Emily later found out that her father had also died, one of many PPD officers who gave their lives to protect the citizens of the city.

After the invasion, Emily's life went downhill. Badly affected by the loss of her family, she lost interest in her schoolwork, and barely scraped through. She gave up on her dreams, and ended up with a minimum wage job, and living with a Hellion in a run-down apartment. By chance, the mystical bracelet that Blaze is bound too was stored in the apartment, with a number of other artifacts that the Hellion's had acquired. Something made Emily take the bracelet, thus restoring Blaze and binding them together.

The spell that Blaze used to re-bind them, after she discovered the original bond was unstable, allowed Emily to see the true nature of Blaze, and she has since stayed dormant, allowing Blaze to control her body. She has surfaced once, when Blaze returned to her apartment, and drew upon the full fury of Blaze's demon to destroy the hellions who she encountered. In the process she destroyed the top three floors of the apartment, marking the end of her previous life. She is currently thinking hard about her life, and what she has become, and deciding what to do about the future.

[edit] Recent History

Reawakened by Emily West, Blaze soon realised that the bond between them was not as it should be. She was unable to read the thoughts and memories of her host, and could only take control when Emily's concious mind was no longer functioning, usually during sleep. In addition, large chunks of her own memory were missing, including the entire of her memories for her previous host. Her initial focus was on her memories, and while on a mission against Arachnos, she ran into an arbiter who she subconciously recognised. Though neither entirely trusted the other, the arbiter admitted that he recognised her, and that he knew about her memory loss. A deal was struck, with the arbiter acquiring a memory shard for her, in exchange for data on some of the cities newer heroes.

While integrating the new memories, Blaze sought a solution to her bond problem. Researching various spells that dealt with broken or damaged spirits, she managed to put together a spell that would rebind her to Emily, restoring the bond to it's correct form and function. With the assistance of Kyle Anders, with whom she had recently struck up a friendship, she performed the spell. Though she herself remembered little of the events, the spell was apparently successful, and gave Blaze control over Emily's body. Emily, meanwhile, seemed to retreat into her own mind, refusing to surface. Putting it down to shock at the sudden change, Blaze is unconcerned about Emily's refusal to surface, but is missing being able to shy away from dealing with people.

Having resolved the bond, and suddenly been thrust forcefully into the day-to-day world that Emily would normally be in control of, Blaze attempted to piece together something that worked. Having accidentally destroyed Emily's apartment, she stayed for several nights in Kyle's hotel while she sorted out a job and a place to live. She found herself a part time job as a security guard at a warehouse in Independence Port, and acquired an apartment nearby.

Though settled in and functioning well at both her job and her hero work, Blaze was now struggling to deal with her interactions with other people. She required little sleep, but required some breaks from her exertions, and could not understand how ordinary people filled in these gaps between work. In particular, as she got to know other heroes better, she found it more difficult to slot people into her black-and-white world view, where everyone is either good, bad or unimportant. Still missing memories, and lacking her host personality to resolve the issue for her, she did her best to come to terms with the strange and complex world into which she had been thrust.

Several postings have given her things to think about. While in Croatoa, she was briefly sent into the spirit world, where she found that she felt strangely at ease, as though she belonged there. Both Emily and her demon, however, became agitated, and refused to settle until they were back in the real world. Two days later, she was sent to Striga Isle to deal with the council threat. Fighting large numbers of war wolves, she found her demon once more becoming agitated, though this time seemingly because it could not unleash its full fury, rather than because it disliked what was happening. Disturbingly, the demon did not settle fully afterleaving the isle, leaving Blaze somewhat on edge, and prone to violent outbursts.

[edit] The Circled Web

What began as a simple dream, which Blaze reluctantly revealed to Kyle, soon developed into a quest, bordering on an obsession. Blaze wanted an end to her current existence. She wanted to be rid of her host and her demon, even if it meant losing her powers. She was tired of having to remember each time she died, and wanted to live a normal life. To do this, she needed to find out how to safely seperate herself from her demon, and then decide what to do with Emily.

The former task was, she decided, considerably easier, and she turned her attention to the circle of thorns. Expecting them to have large libraries with extensive texts on demons and spirits, she struck at one of their hidden strongholds. When she had fought her way to the library, she found a list of books present, but found that all of the ones that caught her attention had been removed. Somewhat worried by the precision with which the books she needed had been spirited away, she stopped to think for a few days before continuing. Following another lead, she stormed a circle stronghold hosting negotiations with nemesis. Again, the books she wanted were gone, but she was, with assistance from her demon, able to extract some information from the nemesis soldiers. Apparently, someone had been there before her, and warned the circle about a threat from the past, and a threat now rising. This mysterious person had taken the books she needed, and Blaze became somewhat uncertain about what exactly was happening.

Deciding that her contacts must be being watched by the circle, Blaze began striking out at the circle wherever she heard of them. Leaving no pattern to her actions, she soon had a lucky break and stumbled upon yet another stronghold while rescuing some kidnapped mystics. This time, there had been no warning of her approach, and she fought her way through to the library, recovering a number of tomes to assist in her efforts. After fighting her way clear, Blaze began to study the tomes, her demon side allowing her to quickly translate the ancient and arcane language they were written in.

While working with the tomes, Blaze continued her efforts to recover more, and this led her into yet another circle stronghold. Here, she found a portal which took her to an ancient city, swarming with circle mages. She managed to hide herself, and spent time going through the vast libraries, and interrogating some of the mages. She discovered that her bracelet was a prison, designed to trap a powerful demon that had broken free of its restraints after being summoned. Owing to the power of the demon, the prison was made of two seperate parts, and only by bringing both parts together could the demon be released. Since she already knew that she was incapable of removing the bracelet herself, she surmised that she was, unintentionally perhaps, one of two people now guarding the demon.

The second half of the prison was another bracelet, and after returning to Paragon City, her contacts were able to track it down. The bracelet had been recovered some years ago by Arachnos, and was currently being used by a semi-loyal freelance agent known as the Heat of Battle. From what little information her contacts could obtain, Blaze concluded that the Mu had an interest in the bracelet, much the same as the Circle did. Departing Paragon City, Blaze left a distraction for the circle to throw them off her trail, and headed for the Rogue Isles, to seek out the Heat of Battle, and find out if the Mu knew any more about her history than the circle.
