Britanic was my first CoH character. Im very patriotic, and I have a great love of my national identity so naturally I wanted to play a hero that reflected that.
The character's backstory, personality, and history has organically developed during my time playing the game. The whole architect thing came from me being formerly in charge of base editing for the PCP. That led on to him being a businessman which then led his development into other directions.
Best of all his unusual mix of associations has led to some fantastic roleplaying situations, as well as his current leadership of the Militia.

[edit] Personality
Easy going but practical, reliable, loyal, and thoughtful. Will generally work to facilitate all parties where possible, and very diplomatic in his thinking. Britanic has managed to overcome the guilt, and confidence issues that plagued his past, and is fast becoming a strong inspirational presence in the metahuman community.
When dealing with enemies he tends to be cocky, and sarcastic in the hopes of winding them up to the point of being inneffective. Hates to be told what to do, and responds badly to threats, and warnings.
In battle he can be ferocious, vindictive, and extremely aggressive, partly in thanks to the negative influence from excessive chanelling of negtive energies. When possible he will approach his battles in a good demeanor in an effort to help curtail the sometimes negative of his own powers.
[edit] Motivation
Britanic's mutant powers surfaced in his teens. However due to fearing being different, as well as the negative influnce drawing on dark energies had on his own personality, he did his best to keep them hidden. Things were made worse after he seriously injured two youths who tried to rob him back during his late teens. after that he did his best to ignore his mutant heritage.
Coming to Paragon just before the first Rikti War, he avoided the fighting due to his own lack of confidence, as well as fear of his abilties. After ending up being severely injured himself during a Rikti attack, he was hospitalised, and after seeing more of the war's victims he started to feel guilt at his inaction. He then decided to confront his fears over his powers, as well as atone for his cowardice.
While in hospital he heard about Hero-1, and the Omega Team's sacrifice which then provided him the inspiration for his own costumed identity.
Today Britanic is confident with his abilities, and although still feels a obligation to make up for his past inaction, is less judgemental of himself.
[edit] Powers
Britanic abilities come from his mutant power to metabolise, and manipulate otherdimensional energies. His primary source of energy is the Dark Dimension (Netherworld, etc A place of many names) which he finds easy to tap, but can have a corrupting influence over him, if he doesnt maintain proper control. How he uses that energy is essentially only limited by his imagination, however he mostly uses it to enhance his fighting abilities, instil fear in his enemies, flight, boost his own secondary mutation of rapid regeneration, and for teleportation.
He also has some small measure of latent psi-ability allowing him to touch others minds to either instill fear, or tag them for teleportation.

[edit] Primary Powers
Dark Melee techniques.
[edit] Secondary Powers
Rapid regeneration, and enhanced resistances.
[edit] Additional Powers
[edit] Travel
Primarily Britanic gets around using the power of flight, however in the past he has been known to open dimensional rips to the Dark dimension to short cut or short distance teleportation. He as since stopped teleporting himself that way as he finds the corrupting influence of dimension's dark energy much more difficult to resist. However he still teleports teammates via this method, but an odd side effect is after doing so he temporarily slightly loses phase with his own dimesion, causing him to become more difficult to see.
[edit] Power Pool
Fitness via a combination of physical training as well as a side effect of own regeneration. also body mastery giving him heightened percetion, greater stamina, as well as the ability to over metabolise, and expel in an energy torrent a wave of energy.
[edit] Abilities
Britanic is an accomplished businessman, and manager. He applies such skills into his style of leadership essentially putting the right people into the right job, essentially minimising his own command input as his people get on with what they are mean't to.
He also has a good grasp of politics, and media savy. Which again he incorporates in the way he commands or deals with others.
His primary field of expertise is being an architect, and civil engineer. As well as being the foundation of his company Sentinel Industries, it means in practical terms he's good at judging structural integrity, knowledgeable on where best to provide explosives for maximum effect (although not trained in the use of explosives himself), as well as more likely to spot unusual building techniques (hidden doors, passages etc).
[edit] Vulnerabilities
The dark energy he primarily uses can sometimes exert a corrupting influence over his will making him more aggressive, and belligerent. This is more likely to happen during battle, or during states of extreme aggitation or anger.
[edit] Equipment
Britanic wears a Militia PDD or Personal Data Device on his wrist proving him with computer mainframe access, GPS capability, radio, holographic, and text communication.
His costume is made of the amazing Polymorphic Fibre Weave invented by the obscure company Eso-Tech. Basically he can use his powers to trigger physical changes in his costume, making the changing between costume to street clothes a snap.
During the second Rikti war he was given a KM-Technologies PACS MK3 combat vest by Big Lunk which he occasionaly wears.
.[edit] Character History
[edit] Early Years
Eric Mitchell was raised by his cockney father Douglas Mitchell alone, in a fairly low rent area of Oxford, in the UK after his mother died in a car crash. His mother’s death was investigated as being suspicious, and theorised that it was related to Douglas once being a reasonably well known fence in the London underworld. However no conclusive evidence was ever found to prove that and these days he has little memory of his mother, and early childhood.
Eric’s school years saw him being fairly gifted physically, as well as academically, and it looked as if his future would be bright. It was at school he also found he had no small measure of artistic ability, and loved to sketch buildings. He soon decided that he wanted to do more than just sketch buildings, but instead, design, and build them. It was with this in mind that he started to prepare himself so that one day he’d train to be an architect.
[edit] Manifestation
During his early teens he started to develop his mutant powers. He couldn’t explain it but he was rarely affected by illness, heal injuries extremely fast, and discovered an amazing tolerance to alcohol. However he also started to discover things he didn’t like, and that actually scared him.
During times of extreme stress, and emotion he felt charged, as if in some sort of adrenaline overload. He found himself more aggressive, less compassionate, and sometimes down right nasty. Worse of all a darkness seem to cloud his mind, seemingly trying to befuddle him into relying purely on instinct. It was during this confusing time, he first used his abilities in anger.
One evening Eric found himself jumped by two youth’s with knives, and was forced to defend himself. What started out as terror at his predicament soon turned to a hateful lust to lash out at his attackers. Without thinking he started to draw dark energies into his body, and turned onto the youth’s unleashing his dark fury upon them. One boy ended up in a coma, the other was seriously injured too. While he was interviewed by the police over the incident, he first heard the word “Mutant!”, and vowed to repress his new found powers.
[edit] University, And The Coming To Paragon City
After pretty much putting the manifestation of his mutant power behind him Eric concentrated on his academic studies going to University to study civil engineering, and architecture. In University he gained an almost legendary status for his ability to consume quantities of alcohol that would kill a normal man. It was during his time at University he made his first trip to Paragon, and fell in love with the city's various building styles.
After University he worked as an architect for several UK building concerns before raising enough money to move to Paragon, and start his first company Citadel Planning and Construction, shortly before the first Rikti war. Thanks to a number of lucretive contracts, as well as some lucky stock market investment, Eric became a financial success.
[edit] The Rikti War
When the Rikti invaded Eric was content to sit it out, and continue as an architect, and engineer. Though he had thought of taking up the fight, the uncertainty, and fear of his own abilities held him back. Instead, he spent most of the war helping to keep roads, essential buildings, and facilities in repair.
As the war was drawing to a close Eric found himself caught in the middle of a Rikti attack. Although he tried to hide, he was soon found by a Rikti soldier. In a moment of panic, and terror he thought back, and let the darkness he always feared take him. He slaughtered the Rikti, but finished the battle seriously injured himself, losing his right eye.
Eric found himself recovering in one of the many field hospitals that were situated across Paragon at the time, where he soon made a decision that would alter his destiny forever. During this time he began to hear the stories of bravery, from his fellow patients, be they normal, or metahuman. He then started to find himself consumed with guilt at his own inaction, and the possible lives he could of saved, had he the courage to embrace his abilities earlier.
It was while he recovered in hospital that Hero-1, and the Vanguard's Omega team made their historic sacrifice. It was this event, and Hero-1 in particular that inspired Eric to learn about his abilities, put them to use helping the city, and take up the heroic mantle of Britanic
[edit] Rikti War Aftermath, And Back To Britain
The Rikti left not only Paragon City, but also the meta-human community devasted. Britanic worked tirelessly to help rebuild Paragon physically, as well as lending his untrained might to the heroic community.
In civilian identity he took to wearing black wrap around sunglasses to disguise both his damaged eye, as well as the strange glow his eyes started to emit. Due to the fact he was never seen without them he was tagged with the nickname "Shades" Mitchell. As Britanic though he wore a black eye patch until his eye had fully repaired itself a couple of years later.
It was during this time Britanic's father suffered a heart attack, and he returned to Britain for several months while he recovered. While back in Britain he continued as Britanic, occassionly partnering with the heroine Lady London, who he also ended up having a short relationship with. Once his father seemed fully recovered from his heart faliure, Britanic once again to pick up his busniess, and hero career.
[edit] Taking The Reigns
.Britanic had continued to function in Paragon City as an independent hero for some before he'd come to the attention of Grey Hawk. The hero Grey Hawk had come across information that Arachnos were planning an invasion into Sirens Call, as well as a number of strikes against the Ziggursky Prison in an effort to free dangerous criminals into Paragon to disrupt the hero community. Grey Hawk planned to form a network of heroes for the purpose of sharing information, and resources. After accidently discovering Britanic's civilian identity, he planned to bring him on board in the hopes that Britanic would lend some of his considerable wealth to the cause.
It wasn't long before Britanic had been recruited, and as Grey Hawk guessed, started to help fund Grey Hawk's newly dubbed Paragon City Protectors. Shortly after Grey Hawk announced he'd be going away for awhile, and left the PCP in the custodianship of his first recruit Dreamshadow, as well as Britanic. What was originally thought to have been an absence of a week or two, soon dragged on, and Britanic declared Grey Hawk missing in action. He then took over effective leadership of the PCP, plowing considerable personal resources into the group, as well as appointing other co-leaders to share the burden. However due to his own rising media profile, as well as his efforts to reorganise the group he remained as the PCP's frontman.
[edit] The PCP, Partisan, And Politics
As time went on, heroes came and went from the PCP, but the group continued to grow. However it was when Britanic recruited the cybernetic police hero COP, that the PCP gained its first nemesis in the form of Partisan, and Humanity First.
Humanity First was a persistant thorn in the side of Britanic, and the PCP, and both groups suffered defeats in their feud. During a period when public opinion of metahumans was at an all time low, documented in the Paragon City Post, and largely thanks to some Humanity First manipulation, Partisan striked at Britanic. Partisan had tipped off a skull ganger that he could ensure his reputation by publically removing the sunglasses off of Eric Mitchell at the opening of a new hospital wing. The ganger did the deed, exposing Eric as being the mutant Britanic, and a number of reprisals from the criminal community were directed against the soft target that was Britanic's company Citadel Planning, and Construction. The reprisals, many of which were orchestrated by Humanity First, served to further inflame public, opinion against Britanic, and metahumans in general, as many innocents were caught in the crossfire.
The reprisals also had the effect of almost bankrupting Britanic, as his company devalued, and insurance companies refused to pay out due to what they said was "a faliure to disclose relevant information to the policy. In the end Britanic was forced to sell out to business rival, and political hopeful Conner Hartman.
A short while later Conner Hartman was shown to be not a public spirited businessman, but rather a calculating Arachnos Officer seeking to infiltrate the US political structure. Thanks to a tip off from Cheryl Voss, a woman who'd later become his personal assistant, Britanic was able to mobilise the PCP into twarting Hartman as well as the building of an Arachnos base on Cuban soil. Hartman was unable to continue his political subterfuge, and was forced into hiding from both the US authorities, and Arachnos. Cuba expelled Arachnos from its shores, and the US State department put a gagging order on the affair keeping it secret from the public.
Britanic then announced his return to the world of business by forming his new company Sentinel Industries, and re-recruited many of his old employees from the original Citadel Planning, and Construction. His first project was the construstion of the PCP's new underground base, Aegis, in Talos Island.
Fuming at his defeat by Britanic, and the PCP, Conner Hartman plotted vengeance using data he'd gained during his takeover of Citadel Planning, and contruction. Although he did not have the plans for the new Aegis facility, he did have them for the PCP's reserve group's base 'The Dugout'. He then contacted Humanity First's Partisan, and sold him those plans.
Partisan, and Humanity First used the plans to gain entry into the base, and through the use of sabotage, and teleportation jammers managed to cut off any heroes escape. However the teleport jammers had no effect on, then Britanic's sidekick, Girl Britannia's magic, and she was able to teleport Britanic into the base, moments before the armoured Romper Stomper broke her neck. Britanic was thrown into a frenzy and tore through the ranks of Humanity First, who then decided to make their escape.
After the raid on the Dugout, Britanic returned to Britain to bury Girl Britannia, and decided he'd destroy Humanity First for good.
On his return to Paragon, Britanic single handedly attacked a Humanity First Rally, and using a device meant to send his otherdimensional counterpart Germanic back to his own reality, exiled both himself, and most of Humanity First's core leadership on what Portal Corp dubbed 'Imperator Earth'.
[edit] Imperator Earth
Britanic spent several months on Imperator Earth, fighting both the Rikti who'd invaded, as well as trying to convince the American resistance he was not the British born Imperial German Empire enforcer Germanic. After he'd convinced the resistance he was not an agent of the Super Power that had invaded America to capture its portal technology, he fought along side them, until they were able to return him to his own reality.
Due to a temporal anomily, what had been several months on Imperator Earth was ony several weeks in his own reality.
[edit] Romance, Family, And A Riot In The Row
Britanic went back to leading the PCP, and went back to his life. During this period, Sentinel Industries flourished, and he decided to take more time out for himself, and enjoy his money.
During this time he became fast friends with street orphan heroine Vigilante Storm, who'd later become his adopted daughter, as well as meeting the Arachnos agent Velvet Spider.
Velvet Spider, and Britanic had a short lived romance, until she captured while tempting to assasinate the heroine Royal Flush.
Hit hard after the news of Velvet Spider's arrest he foolishly sought solace in the arms of another woman, and ended up having a one night stand with a well known celebrity TV interviewer. That never developed much further thanks to Britanic learning of the return of Humanity First, and being enveloped in the events described in the Riot in the Row, during the Tempest Virus scare.
However Britanic did end up meeting future fiance' Hyperion Watchmen's White Vampyr, as well as the Bay State Ranger, who'd later become his second adopted daughter.
The events of the Riot in the Row also served to help Britanic forge a close friendship with Crimson Archer, who alongside the Militia joined with Britanic, and the PCP to thwart Partisan's plan.
[edit] Heroes For People
After the business of the Tempest Virus scare, White Vampyr wanted to do something to help repair public opinion of the metahuman community, as well as try to do something good for the citizenry. She decided to lend her support to the 'Heroes for People' movement, and even drafted a petition for them. However due to some ambiguous wording found herself sparking a massive controversy leading to her temporarily going into hiding.
In an effort to get her back Britanic, and Vigilante Storm held a press conference to try repair the damage, and put the campaign back on track. In the end the stuation caught the eye of the Minister Sir Micheal Wayne, and his organisation helped redraft the petition, as well as relaunch the movement as 'Heroes Among People, and White Vampyr returned home.
Not willing to let White Vampyr run away again, he asked her to marry him after defeating long time adversary Snaptooth, and taking a spectacular diamond ring form his treasure hoard.
[edit] Going Rogue?
Britanic, and White Vampyr had met Ben Big Lunk Campbel, and his wife Echo Campbel, and despite the Campbels being considered criminals, all became good friends. The Campel's had both been heroes, who'd long since lost their licenses, However Britanic thought there was atleast a spark that might one day be used to get them to both rehabilitate.
It was through Big Lunk that Britanic was properly introduced to the New Mafia's notorious leader Pistol, who'd stuck her nose into Britanic, and the Hyperion Watchmen's interrogation of the criminal Mr. Smiles. Neither Britanic, or Pistol could stand each other, and took great pleasure in annoying each other.
It was also during this period that Britanic met the lunatic Doctor Mechano who'd decided Britanic would be his arch-nemesis. Britanic not wanting to dissapoint stepped up to the role, and helped organise a massive crackdown on Mechano's C-Dyne trade.
Britanic then started to actually do business with Big Lunk much to the dismay of Freedom Corps, and an investigation (Secretly pushed by Humanity Firt's Partisan) was launched in the fear Britanic might consider going rogue. However thanks to his efforts in stamping out the C-Dyne trade, as well as negative result investigations from both Freedom, Corps, and the IRS, Britanic was fully exonerated.
Britanic was then able to legally adopt Vigilante Storm, and Bay State Ranger the two girls he had took in.
[edit] From Caretaker to Headmaster
Once again things were going very smooth in Britanic's life. The business was booming, family was growing, the PCP practically ran itself, and he'd even been awarded the prestigious Hero of the City award. However a new challenge was coming Britanic's way.
After a serious run of misfortune for the Militia, Crimson Archer asked if Britanic would take over his role as Field Commander while he both recovered from injuries, and took a long needed break. Britanic agreed and found himself at the head of an organisation racked with inter group conflict, a broken chain of command, and a worsening public image. He strived to get the group back under control, and repair relations when the Rikti Invaded again.
Alongside his friend Big Lunk he helped organise the historic Pocket D war councils, and help broker a truce, ensuring cooperation between the heroes of Paragon, as well as the denizens of the Rogue Islands. As a leading member of the Council he was present at some of the Council most important operations including the sewer network investigations commanded by Zortel, and the MMB strike against the Rikti homeworld.
During the conflict the Milita was once again hit with the death of key members including the other active Militia leader Mercde, putting further pressure on the temporary commander Britanic.
As the Invasion started to calm down, Crimson Archer came to see Britanic, resigning, and permanently giving Britanic leadership of the Militia. Since then he took over operational control of the group, and even the Militia's other official leader Force Commander still defers to Britanic, prefering to instead focus on his research.
[edit] The Guild of Gentlemen Adventurers
It was thank's to Britanic's war efforts, taking over the Militia, heroic and business associations that Britanic's friend Powerstone, and the Mysterious Dead Reckoner decided he'd be a perfect addition to their new Guild of Gentlemen Adventurers line up.
Britanic, along with Zortel, Crimson Archer, Shadowplay were invited to attend a secret dinner party with Powerstone, and the Dead Reckoner where the two intended to recruit the four heroes to their cause.
At the dinner party Britanic, along with the others learnt about the Guild's history, and its various foes. Chief amongst their current enemies was the League of Scoundrels, who were also currently in conflict with the Hyperion Watchmen, Britanic's fiance' White Vampyr's super team. also brought to Britanic's attention was the Leaguer Romanov, a man Britanic knew of from business circles, and who was destined to become a personal enemy.
Although Britanic would of agrred to helping the Guild anyway, the potential threat to his fiance' White Vampyr, was extra incentive to get him to sign up to the new Guild.
[edit] Militia Dissasembled/Re-assembled
For awhile things seemed to be going smooth with the Militia, until it was revealed that their patron Sir Micheal Wayne, was killed in the Rikti conflict. With Wayne out of the way, the board at Wayne Securities made decision to break up the corporation, and sell off the Militia. In a short period of time Britanic and the Militia found themselves evicted from their headquarters underneath Wayne Towers, and the team officially disbanded.
Not willing to take the disbanding of the Militia lying down the Amber Banshee managed to call together a core group of former Militia members including Britanic, to continue working alongside each other as a sort of Militia in exile. The group continued the Militia's legacy, and would even meet at the original Militia team meeting place beneath the Stargazer statue in Atlas Park.
It was then Britanic decided he'd reopen the mothballed Paragon City Protectors reservist base, the Dugout, for their use, and started work refurbishing it. A short while later he discovered that Crimson Archer had bought the rights to the Militia name, and most of its old equipment. The two men then decided to reform the Militia again properly, under Britanic's command.
The Militia was reformed, basing itself in the Dugout in Kings Row. Britanic took the lead as the group administrator, while assigning field command to Amber Banshee, and later promoting GhostSpy to assist her. Crimson Archer, though helping to sponsor the team decided to serve the team in a reservist capacity.
[edit] Wedding Bells
Due to the hectic nature of Britanic, and his fiance' Suzi White aka White Vampyr's lifestyles, their planned wedding seemed to be constantly put off. In the end a frustrated Suzi, anxious to be wed, started to push for a Vegas wedding. Britanic was dead against the idea, and things came to a head on Halloween 2007 at the Last Word's album launch party, when it seemed Suzi had run off after a heated arguement, about wedding arrangements.
The reality was Suzi believed she had been summoned by Watchman commander Bastinado to meet in the Moth Cemetary in Dark Astoria. Unknown to Suzi she was walking into a trap laid by Romanov, who'd already failed in an atempt on her life earlier that evening. as she sped away from the party she ran into Powerstone, who she asked to pass on a message to Britanic explaining she had to see Bastinado.
Britanic meanwhile having tried furiously, but to no avail, organise a spontaneous wedding, feared Suzi was running out on him and tore after her. Luckily Britanic ran into Powerstone who passed on Suzi's message. Deciding he wanted to sort the wedding issue once and for all, he set off for Dark Astoria.
In Dark Astoria, Romanov had summoned a Zombie horde to set upon the unsuspecting Suzi in the Moth Cemetary. Britanic who was flying overhead at the time could see the horde heading off to one point. After calling Suzi on her mobile he realised that she was indeed the horde's target, and managed to guess her location from the direction the undead were heading.
Once Britanic caught up with Suzi, he promised her that if they could stay alive, and fight their way to the Cathedral, he'd get his ally the Priest to perform the wedding ceremony then, and there.
After the pair made their way to the Moth Cathedral they were wed the very early hours of November the first in an extremely bizarre ceremony.
[edit] Britanic's Penthouse
Britanic lives in the penthouse suite, on the twentieth floor of Sentinel Tower, Founders Falls, with his fiance' Suzi (White Vampyr), and two adopted daughters Rachel (Vigilante Storm), and Cassidy (Bay State Ranger).
The most unusual feature of the penthouse is the four energy containment and defense fields. One in the Master bedroom, Rachel's room, Suzi's Music room, and the last recently fitted in Cassidy's room. The fields are linked to an energy receptor, which monitors ambient energy and activates the fields should any abnormal surges be detected. The field's not only contain energy inside them but are effective defense from outside the field also.
