I randomly decided to make a spines scrapper one absolutely freezing afternoon. Regeneration seemed to be the best secondary set, from someone who has never played a scrapper before's perspective. I have no idea why I picked Science at the time. Like any good RPer, I RP'd on him, surprising and terrifically shocking as it may seem. One thing led to another and I was searching through the SG list on the official RP forums and discovered the Hyperion Watchmen. From there I concocted his backstory. BB has since became my favourite RP character, and although I suck at PVP on him (well, that's universal for me xD) my favourite PvE toon as well.
This is a constant WIP, like all of my profiles.

[edit] Affiliations
Ricardo is a member of the Hyperion Watchmen, a group connected only by the source of their powers. He has also has several friends, most notably Big Mick, Mr. Pointless and Col. Blitzkrieger to name the few he considers the closest. He was also good friends with Terrilyn before her death.
He also had a brief relationship Kim Mellows, which Rick (in his own words) "completely f**ked up". It appears the two have managed to reconcile and are now seeing eachother again. Recently,
Although not an "affiliation", he absolutely despises Sinnarus (or, the "emo-gimp" or "emo-bitch", used variably by Rick) beyond words.
He is also on the roster of the Paragon Rugby Team. Manager and friend Big Mick persuaded him to join at the prospect of it being "Like american football but with more violence". Nobody seems to have actually realised as of yet that his regeneration gives him a massive advantage in such a physical sport.
[edit] Personality
Ricardo is typically outgoing and talkative. He's easy to talk to on the subject of heroing but will probably change the subject when it comes to his rather gruesome (on his part) methods of fighting crime unless he trusts the person he's talking to completely. Depending on his mood (and indeed, how drunk he is) he can be inherently hostile to anybody around him or extremely flirtatious.
Recently however, Rick learned the truth about how he got his powers (originally he thought this was a dormant mutation related to the cancer he inherited from his father). A drastic change in his personality seems to have occured and he has gained a rather courageous streak.
He has a habit of becoming extremely attatched to friends and relatives. He claims this is because he's unwilling to loose them as he has his brothers and parents.
[edit] Motivation
Ricardo's motivation as a hero comes from his past crimes. He isn't actually remorseful of what he did; he barely did anything in fact, he was nailed for association to the Skulls; he just wants to get back on the Skulls for landing him a year and a half in the Zig. Other than that he's a shameless thrillseeker and apparently seems to get kicks out of life-or-death situations such as a gun being held to his head. There isn't much of an explaination, he's just crazy like that.
As with the other Hyperion Watchmen, Rick is also motivated to find a cure for the condition the Watchmen each share, and avenging the death of Hyperion Star.

Fortitude Boneblade is extremely hard to kill due to his spontaneous tissue regeneration.
Stamina His regeneration can keep him going for a remarkable amount of time.
Speed Boneblade is quick on his feet and has surprisingly good reaction times naturally.
Melee With great big spines coming out of your body, you tend to be able to cause a lot more damage than a normal person can in a fight. Need I say more?
Blasts Rick has learned to project his spines at high velocities for at least 10-15 feet, although this is the height of his ranged capability.
Support Rick has no means of supporting his teammates other than being a bit of an optimist, able to verbally encourage his friends a bit if they need it.
Control His neurotoxin secretion allows him to slow down his opponents in battle.
Rick's powers stem from his bone marrow cancer. The strange explosion Hyperion Star gave off when he died twisted his affliction into spontaneous tissue regeneration, and massive random growth of his skeletal structure. These "spines" of bone often burst through his skin and are abnormally tough and hard to break, suitable for combat. Rick uses these "boneblades" as sparingly as he can in combat, but under stress he will literally burst (With bones). The spines will retract into his normal skeletal structure when he calms down and there is no evidence of them ever being there. Rick's regeneration somewhat dulls the pain as healing begins immediately after the wound is made, but complete healing can only occur when his spines are fully retracted.
[edit] Primary Powers
As explained above Rick can produce spines of bone from any point of his body that has a bone inside. Indeed, Ricardo is armed with about 206 potentially lethal weapons at all times. A mixture of natural adrenaline, heightened regeneration and pain medication keep the pain from unbearable levels so he can still concentrate in battle. A TENS unit he recently acquired assist with this. Recently he has gained the ability to fire shards of bone from various points of his body as ranged projectile weapons in a similar manner to his "vanilla spines" as he calls them occasionally.
Boneblade can also secrete a neurotoxic venom at will from inside his spines, believed to be what was once his bone marrow, made unbelievably toxic. This can make those exposed to it extremely drowsy and sluggish and even render an opponent unconscious in large quantities. Instead of cutting his opponents up, an option some might opt for, he prefers to simply give them a few large doses of neurotoxin, using his bone-spikes as a sort of syringe, until they pass out for deposition at the local police station.
[edit] Secondary Powers
Ricardo’s spontaneous tissue regeneration, a fairly common power among the heroes and villains of today, causes his body to start generating massive amounts of platelet cells and other nessecary cells around the wounds shortly after it is inflicted. Within seconds bullets will be forced out by the sheer amount of cells gathering around the wound and massive slash wounds will be closed, and any scabbing and clotting will fall off nigh-instantly. Burnt tissue will simply peel off and new skin will form in its place. He is virtually indestructible, but a bullet to the head will kill him fairly easilly.
The cancerous nature is in tune with his nervous system as much that it only occurs when he is injured, although he must take a regular dosage of Hyperdex to prevent it spiraling out of control.
Rikti plasma attacks have proven to be extremely hard to regenerate for Rick, presumably due to the sheer heat that caused the burns.
[edit] Additional Powers
Rick’s regeneration will negate most harmful effects of chemicals. However, his body will handle drugs such as alcohol as normal. The exception would be drugs that cause rapid cell death (E.G. Superadine). His regeneration will stop natural cell damage, so he can laze around all day on the sofa whilst maintaining the nigh-peak physical fitness he had at the time of the Rivera Incident. Theoretically, this would also stop his physical aging process completely, but it hasn't been long enough since the Incident to actually test this.
[edit] Travel
Rick has displayed the ability to hop clean over a house. This is most likely the result of his ability to push himself to the absolute limit of his already inhuman fitness, and how his regeneration will almost instantly heal any damage this exertion will cause.
More recently, he has sprouted a pair of semi-skeletal wings. Although not enough to sustain true flight, they give him much more manouverability in the air and can keep him moving for longer.
[edit] Power Pool
Rick has access to the Fitness power pool thanks to his enhanced physique.
Bizzarely enough, Rick has demonstrated a minor skill in dark magic, which he can use to enhance his strikes for a brief period of time. He claims that this is a trick he picked up whilst running with the Skulls. ((Sands of Mu vet power, plus the IC explaination for Build Up))
[edit] Abilities
Rick has knowledge of various “styles” (if they can be awarded that notion) of street fighting from witnessing and engaging in street brawls as a member of the Skulls, along with informal tutoring from his gang mates. He can also knit about as is humanly possible.
[edit] Vulnerabilities
Despite his virtual unstoppability thanks to his regeneration, Rick is still human, at least on a psychological level. The best way to harm him, literally, is harsh language. Threats, insults, and other things will make him act as any other feeling person would. Also, explosives in the proximity to him and anything else that would kill a normal person instantly are as affective as ever with Rick. However, the phrase “Don’t wound what you can’t kill” is too true for Rick. On the plus side, if you catch him in agony as his spines begin to tear through his skin and flesh, he is open for attack as his body will try and combat the internal attack like a disease.
He isn’t the brightest kid either. Outwitting him is not impossible, and can get him into some sticky situations.
[edit] Equipment
Along with standard Watchmen equipment, Rick has access to specially tailored equipment thanks to his sister, Samantha Martinez, a lab technician in the Galaxy City division of SERAPH. Made from at least semi-sentient materials recovered by the Portal Corps and handed over to SERAPH for scientific analysis, his combat suit appears to have derived from Rick’s own abilities and mimicked them, gaining a regenerative factor similar to his own. The suit was recently "laminated" with Polymorphic Fibre Weave, so Ricardo can alter its texture and colour by sending energy through it. He also wears a pair of wrap-around sunglasses, tinted with red, which have inbuilt thermal vision and night vision capabilities, visual recording and can detect changes in heartrate and in the nervous system, also courtesy of his sister.
Recently, he has acquired a cape constructed of Polymorphic Fibre Weave after recalling a suggestion from White Vampyr as an alternative to purchasing new clothes every times his spines were extended. The brooch he wears is in fact designed to send energy coursing through it upon activation, which allows it to shift shape from a long cape with the texture of cotton to a leather jacket. He has also began to wear a facemask connected to the cape.
He currently refuses to wear the Watchmen uniform, "until the Doc figures out how to make it fix itself", as he says. He does, however, carry the standard set of ampules and other equipment used by the Watchmen. The late Dr. Furnace and Johnny Ember recently built Rick a Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulator, or just a TENS, to moderate the level of pain he experiences during the growth of his spines and combat through sending electrical impulses through his nervous system.
He also has recently acquired a pair of heavilly customised Vanguard vambraces. The majority of these vambraces is, in fact, merely massive clusters of nanomachines. The nanonmachines scatter to make room for his spines when they are extended and fly back into place when they are retracted. The tiny anti-gravitic motors contained within each nanomachine allow him to manoveur freely in the air during his long jumps and control the trajectory of his thrown spines. The nanomachines have a tendency to form tiny layers around the tips of his spines which process his neurotoxin and convert it into a strong corrosive acid when Rick is dealing with non-human threats such as the Devouring Earth and the Rikti, undead such as the Banished Pantheon and the Vahzilok, and various kinds of robots and elemental creatures. He can also use the vambraces as "bucklers" to block attacks.
He also carries the keys to 9 Freedom Court, which was until recently owned by his friend Terrilyn. After her death, she left the building to Rick in her will.
Furthermore, he's also been sighted using some kind of entropic shielding system which drains different types of energy out of projectiles ((this is how I explain the animated aura that comes with the Integration toggle.)) It's unknown where he acquired this.
[edit] Character History
[edit] Early life
Rick was born into a fairly standard family to parents Eduardo and Silvia Martinez, Cuban immigrants in an upper-class neighbourhood in New Orleans as the second youngest of four brothers and a sister. He enjoyed a normal life, almost too normal, with few special treats and the like, but from a small age understood how his parents were struggling to cope feeding four children and keeping a modestly expensive roof over their heads and was content with what he had. By the time he was 10 he was well-known around his neighbourhood as a polite, friendly young man.
When he was 12, however, his 17-year-old sister Anabella fell into a brooding depression shortly after the disappearance of her long-term boyfriend, Mark, who appeared to be mutating naturally at the time. Around, Rick’s father fell ill with bone marrow cancer and died by the time Rick was 13. Their mother, relating to her daughter’s sorrow and the most recent tragedy, claimed the area was cursed in her hysteria and took her family to Paragon City; Birthplace of tomorrow.
[edit] Birthplace of Tomorrow
The Martinez family settled in the Kings Row area and moved into a decent house with everything they needed; a bedroom each, running water, electricity, standard stuff. Rick’s mother became a recluse, electing to work at home, and his sister got a job at SERAPH which she maintained 10 years on. The four brothers became a social clique in their own right, all still brooding over the death of their father, only hanging out with each other and a select few close friends.
Unfortunately, tragedy struck again when Rick was 17 when the youngest of the Martinez brothers, Jose, was killed in a car collision. This was followed with the noteless suicide of his mother. The remaining three brothers became more and more introverted and to make matters worst, when Rick was 19, he was diagnosed with the same thing that killed their father; cancer in his bone marrow.
[edit] The Skulls
Rick’s diagnosis was marked by a private pact between the three brothers; do whatever the hell they want, whenever the hell they want, to make Rick’s final years more enjoyable to him. As further investigation revealed that the driver of the car which killed Jose was a Hellion, the brothers found it fitting to hook up with their arch-rivals, the Skulls. They were welcomed into the gang, and their hedonism spree quickly became more violently criminal in nature.
On the eve of Rick’s 21st birthday, February 11th , him, his brothers and several other Skulls gangers got absolutely drunk off their heads to celebrate. As they paraded drunkenly through the streets of their home turf, Kings Row, a renowned Death Head of the Skulls, known locally as Robbie Ribcage, ended up raping and murdering the girlfriend of Hellions Damned, Blazeblood. In his rage, Blazeblood decided that his crew were going to talk to Ribcage and co.; on Valentine’s Day, the day he had planned to propose to his deceased girlfriend.
[edit] The Rivera Incident
6pm, 14th of February. Ribcage had elected to raid an abandoned Crey Biotech factory in the neighbourhood now known as Outbreak and Rick accompanied him. At that moment a banged up Chevrolet Impala SS sped past and a bullet hit Robbie Ribcage squarely in the face, killing him instantly. The Skulls gangbangers managed to shoot out the tyres of the car as it made its escape, causing it to crash. Minutes later several dozen Hellions charged at the group of Skulls, pistols, SMGs and even infernal magic flying, resulting in a large gang war that killed 23 young men and hospitalised 5, Rick included in the latter.
As Rick was hurried to the Rivera Hospital, Hyperion Star was literally ready to burst in his bed. By the time he was in intensive care with a bullet in the chest, bleeding to death, and with his cancer reaching terminal stages as it was, Rick fell unconscious and was out for two days.
When he woke up he was fully healed. Apart from excruciating sharp pains. And he was also in the Ziggursky Maximum Security Penitentiary.
[edit] The Zig
Sufficient evidence had been provided on Ricardo’s association with the Skulls that he was to be sent to prison without official trial on his part. This sparked up mild controversy regarding Ricardo's rights being breached and its legitimacy is still being debated to this day. However, his brothers had managed to convince the Jury that they had committed all of Rick’s crimes. They were sentenced to 10 years each, whilst Rick was given 1 and a half years for association.
Ricardo avoided the other prisoners during his stay in the Zig as much as he could. However, in the shower rooms one day, he was cornered by Hellions members within the Zig who were still extremely angry with the Skulls and in turn Rick, despite having already killed Robbie Ribcage. The first fist that came towards Rick’s chest was cleanly skewered by his upper right rib which had somehow suddenlygrown sufficiently to burst through his skin.
Upon seeing his powers and the uncontrollable randomness of them, the prison officials had Rick transferred to the Zig’s Metahuman wing as a mutant. He was spared an extended sentence as they realised that he could not control his powers. Each time he was in an awkward situation, angry, anything like that, he found himself a literal porcupine of bones.
[edit] Freedom
On the 23rd August 2007, Rick was released from the Ziggursky prison and forcefully assigned to unpayed community service with SERAPH as a hero. Codenamed Boneblade by the scientists, he was reunited with his sister who had became a highly renowned and successful technician with SERAPH. She created him a suit with some material SERAPH had acquired to help him combat crime whilst not having to constantly buy a new costume each time his spines protracted.
Rick attained a job in Super-Mart, a run-down supermarket in Kings Row, and got himself an apartment. He adapted to hero life quickly, started to go to Pocket D in his spare time and made several acquaintances.
[edit] Recent History
Recently, however, a chance encounter with White Vampyr in D, bluntly put, screwed his life to hell and back. He learned the details of the Rivera incident, the circumstances as to why he could remember nothing (which was entirely due to blood loss, unlike other people who simply couldn’t recall details) and the Hyperion Watchmen. He agreed to join the Watchmen after he got his life into order once again.
Since then he has managed to balance his duty to the Watchmen with his social life, his job and other things. Along with the other Hyperion Watchmen, he recently recieved a Bronze star in an individual ceremony and a Silver star collectively with his teammates. After briefly working for Patrick McBride, nephew of his friend Big Mick, he's once again hopped jobs, this time over to Vanguard as a soldier. This differentiates from actually volunteering to fight for them as most heroes chose to do in that he is paid as a soldier and had to do certain shifts.
He also recently protected the Terra Volta Reactor from invading Sky Raider mercenaries employed by Arachnos to detonate a nuclear device in the reactor core, the purpose being to wipe out the city's power in order to launch a full-scale Arachnos invasion. He, along with the rest of the Watchmen, Holly Steel and an unknown hero (Mary Harper), held wave after wave of Sky Raider off as they attempted to reach the reactor. ((And that Trial seriously kicked arse because we absolutely dominated it! :D))
On the 23rd of March 2008, Ricardo found out that his community service was over; as of a month prior. He'd been forced to do excess amounts of hero work for an extra month due to a filing error in Hero Corps. Although he was infuriated at this, he has now officially been made a fully-fledged hero (and with this, no more "shifts"; hero work has become entirely optional, as is normal) and Hero Corps has extended its condolences (and a compensation sum of $1000) to Rick. He also recently returned to using a modified version of his original costume when not working with the rest of the Watchmen, a symbol of his full hero status.
With a proper hero license and a grand better off, you'd think Rick would be very happy. Sadly this is not the case. News of Terrilyn's death didn't go down too well with him and he reportedly went on a brutal rampage against the Vahzilok as a way of releasing his anger in which he managed to severely damage the "powered armour" of cybernetic corpses used by Doctor Vahzilok himself. He has also been left Terrilyn's privately owned apartment block, 9 Freedom court, but aside from moving into it it's unsure what he plans to do with the building.
[edit] Trivia
- The name "Ricardo Martinez" came from my character in a text-based forum roleplay in which little nerds like me played the roles of gangstaz in da hood. At that point, Rick was a Mexican immigrant who dealt cannabis in a run-down area of Brooklyn. Er, don't ask. Really, don't.
- Rick is ambidextrous, although he prefers to use his left when writing.
- Rick is a massive fan of gangsta' rap, Detroit rap and hip-hop (with one band he loves as an exception - see below), although like any person capable of intelligent thought, he absolutely despises Soulja Boy. It really is that crap.
- The tattoos on Rick's arms are the only things that continue to signify him as a member of the Skulls. He absolutely hates them. On several occasions he has attempted to burn or cut the tattooed skin off (mainly in drugged-up fits of rage during the early stage of gaining his powers), but they are literally a part of his body due to his physical changes brought on by the Rivera Incident and regenerate as normal tissue would.
- Rick's "closet band" is New Order. He can be heard singing his favourite track, "1963" under his breath on rare occasions, or perhaps humming or whistling the tune as he walks down the street. The only people aware of his love of the band are a few of the patrons of the Fourth Wall.
- Is absolutely convinced that Terrilyn has some sort of telepathic ability that she herself is unaware of, possibly due to her guessing the intention of the conversation he started with her when he first met her.
- He also owns a tamed Nether Imp called Walter which his friend Phantom Fist gave him for his 23rd birthday.
- Rick is half-embaressed, and half-flattered (at the forum feedback) after featuring on Terrilyn's amateur pornography website. Rick ended up in such a situation after getting completely hammered on tequila shots and an unhealthy amount of absinthe one night. He tries to keep this publically secret, especially in front of girlfriend Kim Mellows
- The "Mark" mentioned to be his sister's boyfriend in the character history section is in fact my SS/Invuln Brute, Iron Alligator.
- Bone is one of the people who knows the truth about Terrilyn's surname.
