Character concept: I had been toying with the idea of making a MA/SR scrapper for some time and I eventually hit upon the idea of using SR to represent precognition and Black Providence was born.

Steven most often comes across as calm, if slightly detached from his surroundings. Exceptionally patient, Steven rarely gets outwardly angry. Polite, if arguably something of a flirt where members of the opposite sex are concerned he also possesses a fairly dark sense of humour.

Initially Steven just wanted to be just a normal kid. That changed however when his mother was killed in a mugging gone wrong and Steven now uses his abilities to bring justice to the street gangs of Paragon City.

Steven is a self-centered precog. He can see up to 10 minutes into his own future and can visualise all the possibilities that could occur from a given starting point so long as it affects himself. He has occasionally described it as “like viewing a weird kaleidoscopic three dimensional tree diagram thing, except I see it all in the space of a couple of heartbeats”

Early Life

Steven was born in Paragon City to his mother Susan Veran and father Dominic Rochester. His childhood was not the best; his father was a severe alcoholic and regularly beat his mother while drunk while Steven was forced to watch.

It was this situation that lead to Steven becoming a very quiet and withdrawn child and many of his classmates at school regarded him as something of an oddity. Eventually the PPD intervened after a concerned neighbour informed them of his suspicions and Dominic was imprisoned and issued with a restraining order.

Following the removal of his “father” from the family home life improved significantly and Steven began to come out of his shell of isolation at school and found to his surprise that he had a talent for athletics and whilst the school gym teacher did try and persuade him to try out for the track and field team it was instead the martial arts that caught his attention; possibly due to a desire to ensure that should his “father” ever show up again he would be able to protect his mother.

Awakening

By the time Steven turned 14 he was a proficient martial artist and had won a couple of minor city martial arts tournaments for young teenagers. The discipline and confidence that his karate training helped instil in him had finished pulling him out of his shell and he was exceptionally well liked by his peers.

However just shy of his 16th birthday things changed. It started as nothing particularly serious, just a series of semi regular headaches and occasionally blurred vision. The headaches became more and more frequent until he awoke one morning to discover his iris’s had turned a peculiar shade of silver and he began to experience extended periods of time where he seemed out of sync with the events occurring around him, often answering questions in class before they had been asked. Suffice to say this freaked his class mates out more then a little and he rapidly went from a popular member of his year group to a veritable social pariah.

It wasn’t until the school councillor put in a call to GIFT that the situation began to turn around. With help from several members of GIFT, specifically “Oracle”; a powerful telepath, he began to learn to control his newly manifested abilities and within the space of several months gained sufficient control to turn his abilities on and off at will as opposed to having them trigger randomly.

Hero

Despite his abilities Steven just wanted to be a normal kid; it’s not to say that he wouldn’t fight to protect those dear to him, just that he had no particular desire to place himself on the line for some abstract ideal as “the greater good”.

That changed however when his mother was killed in a mugging gone wrong two years after his mutation manifested. After hunting down those responsible and brining them to justice he officially registered with as a hero and has since spent his time dealing with a lot of the lower intensity problems plaguing the city. Indeed he has become something of a bane to many of the street gangs and criminal syndicates that exists within the city.
