[edit] Personality
Despite his intimidating appearance, Lunk has a tendency towards being a somewhat gentle person. His almost cultured accent, and general appearance hide the truth that this hero was once one of the most dangerous mercenaries operating out of the Etoile Isles. His humour is somewhat crass, most likely due to influence during his army days. Although normally amoral in his actions, when faced with a situation that requires more than just cursory thought, he will choose the morally just option.
[edit] Family Time Line (1930 - 1980)
[edit] 1932
Teenager Samuel Campbell, a former supporter of Moseley's "new party", joins the British Union of Fascists, drawn to the ideals of unity, justice, and a single European nation.
[edit] 1935
Samuel is selected to be among 6 candidates for "project Setanta", the BUF super-soldier program, devised from research borrowed from Axis nations. Of the 6 subjects, 3 survive: Samuel Campbel, Marcus Carrington, and Larry O'Brien. Samuel Campbel's muscle mass and bone density were increased dramatically, earning him the nickname "Big Lunk". At a 50% fatality rate, "project Setanta" is considered a failure, and is sent back to the drawing board.
[edit] 1938
The 3 subjects of "project Setanta" are sent to work for The International Criminal Police Commission in Austria (later to become InterPol) under control of the German Geheime Staatspolizei.
[edit] 1939
At the outbreak of World War 2, Samuel Campbel turns mole, and leaks intelligence to the Allied Nations.
[edit] 1940
with the prohibition of the BUF, the UK government seizes all data on "Project Setanta", which had taken the direction of building a human heavy weapon's platform. The government deems these plans to be impossible to carry out, and shelves the project.
[edit] 1941
Samuel Campbel marries Maria Aranaz, a secretary to General Franco's Government.
[edit] 1945
With V.E, The International Criminal Police Commission headquarters are taken by Allied forces. Marcus Carrington flees Europe, Larry O'Brien is taken as a P.O.W (later in the year, he is shot during an escape attempt, and is now missing, presumed dead), and Samuel Campbel, after his work in supplying intelligence is taken into consideration, is permitted to continue working as an officer of "Interpol"
[edit] 1952
Richard Michael Campbel, the child of Samuel and maria Campbel, is born. Within weeks, he shows signs of genetic mutations similar to those of his father.
[edit] 1961
Samuel Campbel's employment is passed to the European Community as an "enforcer" of European law.
[edit] 1969
R.M Campbel joins his father as an enforcer
[edit] 1970
R.M Campbel marries fellow enforcer, Sandra "sandy" Erikson.
[edit] 1976
Samuel Campbel retires from active service.
[edit] 1977
After pressure from R.M Campbel and several other "super powered" enforcers, the European Community creates the MetaHuman Guard, a covert operations unit designed to deal with terrorist, military and political threats to European stability. R.M Campbel takes his father's nickname, "Big Lunk" as a call sign.
[edit] 1980
Ben Campbel is born
[edit] Early life
Born into loving family of the metahuman soldier, R.M "Big Lunk" Campbel (the second 'hero' to hold the name "Big Lunk"), the first five years of Ben Campbel's life where relatively normal for a child in a military family, moving between on-barrack housing throughout the European mainland and the UK. At around age five, whilst on holiday, leaving Ben in the care a friend, his parents, R.M and Sandra, where gunned down in their hotel room by an unknown assailant. From then, his legal guardianship was transferred to R.M Campbel's commanding officer, Jonathan Telburn, raised and taught on-barracks, and treated as an unofficial platoon mascot. At age eight his size began to increase at an accelerated rate. By 10, he stood shoulder to shoulder with all but the largest of the Metahuman Guard's soldiers. By the onset of puberty, he dwarfed them. Throughout his teenage years, he was trained extensively in the ways off war, until at age 18, he was placed on full active service within the Metahuman Guard, using his father's call sign, "Big Lunk"
[edit] Pre Rikti War
Through the late 90's and early 00's, Big Lunk served in many skirmishes with super powered terrorists threats, earning decoration for bravery, and distinguished service. One such incident, referred to as 'the Beast of Grudziadz', where the MHG was called in to clear what was first believed to be a rampaging mutant, but instead found a large demonic creature, cemented Lunk's inherent dislike of demons. In 2000, due to the re-opening of the phase 2 files of the Setanta Project by private research scientist, Hernando Aranaz, Lunk underwent extreme cybernetic alterations, His bone, blood, and internal organs almost entirely replaced with metal, robotics, and nanotech, mostly at the cost of the MHG's funding for the next five years.
When the Rikti war struck, the MHG, at the time stationed at a subterranean staging facility, took the explosive activity on the surface, and the subsequent loss of communication lines, as indication of a tactical nuclear strike by an unknown party, and locked down the base, in fear of fallout or possible secondary strikes. By the time news reached them, the invasion was all but over. Their lack of action, as well as their previous 'miss use' of funding, did not sit well with the European Commission, who called for the disbanding of the Unit. Many transferred to national service, whilst Ben 'Big Lunk' Campbel was assigned to Paragon City, as part of a good-will gesture due to the blow they had taken during the invasion.
[edit] The Paragon Years
Whilst stationed in paragon Lunk made a quick adaptation from soldier to hero, shunning the lethal methods he had trained in, and relying more and more on the non-lethal energy weapons implanted into his fists, and mêlée combat. Making countless arrests, and foiling numerous plots, Ben Campbel started to make a name for himself as a go-to guy for heavy assaults. During the Rularuu incursion of September 2004, Lunk, along with a small group of other heroes and police, held the line outside the Brickstown hospital during heavy fighting.
During early 2005, he met Claire Rossi, after rescuing her from members of the 'Freakshow' twice in the same day. The pair developed a friendship, and later began dating. Whilst on holiday, where he planned to propose, the plane they where on went down, leaving Lunk as the only survivor, and in a severally weakened state, having lost most of his sub-dermal armour. Heartbroken and depressed, he came to the conclusion that a life dedicated to heroism is a wasted life, that for the hundreds that he had saved, he had failed to save the one person that meant the most to him. During a heavy bout of drinking, he attacked another hero in a bar fight, killing him, before calmly sitting back down, and awaiting arrest at the hands of Longbow.
[edit] The Zig, EVIL, and beyond
[edit] Imprisoned
Ziggursky Prison was harsh on Lunk. Suddenly placed amongst gangs of criminals that he had helped arrest, it was too long before violence erupted. Within a week, he was moved into solitary confinement, where he remained until autumn 2005. Usually content to remain in his cell during rioting, Lunk was broken out, and ushered to a waiting aircraft with numerous others. Arriving in Mercy island, the passengers where let out of the flyer, Lunk was given a standard power shield, and left to his 'freedom'.
[edit] EVIL
It wasn't too long before Lunk turned to mercenary work, in order to maintain an income, and was picked up by the mercenary agency, the EVIL.
During his time with EVIL, Lunk met Echo Campbel (at the time, Echo Hammer), who would later become his girlfriend after a somewhat troubled start.
During the spring of 2006, after a split from the head office in London, Lunk took the role of deputy director of EVIL.
[edit] troubles
After walking in on the rape of his girlfriend by the demon Tao'Grim, possessed by a greater demon, Togrin, Lunk and Echo began to drift apart, as Echo began a secret affair with Tao'Grim, and using Lunk as a means of assisting in the banishment of Togrin, before breaking off the relationship all together.
Feeling used and discarded, He fell into a deep depression, becoming suicidal, and hateful of all life. Around this time, it was revealed to him, by chance, whilst speaking to Tao'Grim, that the information in the stage 1 Setanta project did in fact contain an element of truth, and that Lunk's bloodline was 'tainted' with something far beyond normal human. Looking for answers, and purpose to his life, he looked for help beyond the physical plain, and received an answer in the form of the war goddess, Morrigan, who's mortal child, known as the Claihmt De Morrigan (or blade of Morrigan) was part of Lunk's bloodline.
Morrigan, weakened by centuries of going un-worshipped, took control of Lunk, whom she refers to as 'the child' or a 'living weapon of flesh and iron', and used him to try and force a great battle from which she could feed. Morrigan's departure was eventually eventually bargained for, by Flerous, a servant of an elder demon, who offered her her battle away from the realm of man. Unknown to anyone, however, an aspect of Morrigan remains in Lunk's subconscious, watching 'her child', completely hidden, and has since made two appearances since the possession. Once when a psionic attack inadvertently struck her in Lunk's mind, causing her to lash out, harming him in the process. and once during the second Rikti invasion, where she fortified him for the coming war. Both incidents are not known to have been connected to Her.
[edit] Africa
During the summer of 2006, along with a number of former members of the Metahuman Gaurd, Ex-KGB and American mercenaries, Lunk took part in an operation to reinstate the rightful government of the north-west African country,Sharadia, after a coup.
After learning that the promised payment would not be made, and being in too deep to extract their forces, Telburn's men devised a plan to raid the national diamond reserve, and smuggle out the diamonds in a coffin, supposedly containing the body of Lunk (who had faked his own death by blowing himself up, and spending the next month recovering in a full immersion nanite medi-vat). The explosion caused to hide the robbery decimated the financial district of Sharadia's capital city, and resulted in the deaths of near 300 people.
With the supposedly dead Ben Campbel taking the blame for the deaths, and the 'missing' diamonds, the MHG slipped out of the country with Lunk's partially dismembered body, as his coffin, loaded with diamonds, was sent to the Etoile Isles.
[edit] South America
With the unconscious Lunk's body reassembled, and suspended in a nanite restoration vat, the MHG began work for the red cross, transporting medical supplies along a rail line spanning South America.
Echo Hammer, who had been attempting to repair their failed relationship, long distance, whilst Lunk was away, contacted Telburn in an attempt to find out what had gone on. Telburn invited Echo to meet with the convoy as they passed through a Columbian freight depot, where her boyfriend, who she had thought dead, was revealed to still be alive, albeit stripped of a large portion of soft tissue. Distraught, Echo fled from the freight depot, back to the Etoile Isles.
A month later, the convoy reached Mexico, and with Lunk fully healed, he parted ways with the MHG, Heading to a small town to organise the sale of the diamonds.
With the diamond's smuggled back off of the Etoile Isles, and on their way to Mexico, Lunk organises a trade with a man going by the name of 'Jose Cortez'. The trade is made, Cortez is discovered to be a FBI agent. The diamonds where recovered, and shipped back to the Etoile isles, care of the Dead Dogs gang.
Lunk is finally arrested, after an attack on an FBI office, and is shipped back to Paragon city to serve sentence.
[edit] Back in the Isles
With the help of Operative Rickman of EVIL, Lunk broke out of the Zig on the 7th of December.
Finding EVIL reduced to a fraction of it's former strength, Lunk began to rebuild the company from the bottom up, drawing back former directors Echo Hammer and Laugh Riot, as well as a handful of former agents.
It was also in December that Lunk proposed to Echo, planning a wedding for Valentine's day, 2007. (the pair eloping to London to marry in private after problems in the isles nearly laid waste to the plans)
During the spring of 2007, due to financial problems caused by Lunk trying to personally fund the rebuilding of EVIL, he was forced to find a buyer for the diamonds retaken from the FBI/Mexico deal. A buyer was eventually found in armourworks, via Britanic, who bought the diamonds for the use in force field focus lenses. A large portion of the profits from the deal where pumped into a joint, on going, renovation project with Britanic's Sentinel Industries in King's Row.
[edit] Entrepreneur
In order to make sure the money going into the renovation project was 'legal', a small gadgetry company based in Port Oakes, KM-Technologies, was purchased, and multiple small low interest loans where taken out in the company name, which where then paid off using the interest gained from the more dubious diamond money which was placed in a single high interest account, over the course of several months.
KM-Tech itself took a change of direction under its new management, switching from producing digital watches, communication devices, and executive toys, to armour and specialist weaponry.
This change paid off, as the cheap and easily manufactured P.A.C.S mk3 became an invaluable mainstay of many squads during the Rikti invasion.
[edit] Second Rikti War
When the invasion struck, Lunk, with the help of his close friend Britanic, called a council of representatives from Paragon city and the Rogue Isles.
Meeting several times over the course of the attacks, the 'council of war' encouraged cooperation with Vanguard forces, and agreed to a temporary truce between the heroes of Paragon and anyone, even if they are a wanted criminal, who worked towards Earth's resistance to the Rikti.
With the Rikti forces denied their foothold in zones outside of White Plains, a few of the council discussed a means of striking back at the invaders.
A hand picked team, consisting of Lunk, Britanic, Coile, Zortel, Nightschild, Powerstone, the Priest, and Doctor Helios, assaulted several key locations, and set off MMB devices (a type of Psionic cascade device) through portals into strategic military positions on the Rikti world. Media coverage 1 23
The loss of his colleague, Alex Helios led Lunk towards using more 'direct' methods in combating the Rikti menace, heading into battle heavily armed, including the use of weapons taken from the fallen enemy.
[edit] Return to Paragon
Towards the end of the invasion, Lunk and his wife, Echo Campbel started to grow apart. After a brief secret affair between Echo and blue serpent, the couple split, and Lunk found solace in the arms of Rebecca Saunders, who was working for EVIL at the time under the name 'Gun Mage'
When Rebecca was pardoned for the crimes she didn't commit, she returned to Paragon City, using her powers as a hero. Lunk, in an effort to prove the seriousness of the relationship, took this as an opportunity to get himself back 'on the right track', and applied to the local authorities, to have his licence reinstated.
After weeks of psychological testing, and in light of his work for the vanguard, and in rebuilding Kings Row, Lunk was placed on a probational licence, and finally given full licence status in the following months.
[edit] Vigilant Justice
In the late half of 2007, Lunk joined the Unity Vigil organisation.
[edit] Businesses
With the success of the 2008 first quarter catalogue for KM-Technologies, Lunk decided to branch out into commercial biotech.
Purchasing the former MPSI facilities in Peragrine Island, Lunk had them converted into a research facility for the new company, Dynagen
[edit] Kidnap
Some time at the beginning of March, 2008, two villains (Battle Unit Omega and Rip Fang) attempted to trick and ambush Rebecca.
Alerted by their strange behaviour beforehand, Rebecca contacted her husband, and convinced the would-be kidnappers to allow him to observe whilst she 'assisted their (rip and b.u.o's) friend.'
Although Rip managed to get close enough to take a swipe at Rebecca, the pair fought them off, in a very one-sided battle, the attackers eventually retreating with numerous injuries.
[edit] Family Man
At 3:20pm, on Monday the 10th of March, Rebbecca gave birth to two healthy Twins, Mark Kerano Campbel and Hannah Svyna Campbel.
[edit] Power Level
Fortitude: Lunk's cybernetic enhancement gives him a high level of resilience, and the nano-tech has been known to rebuild his body from minimal remains.
Stamina: Lunk's stamina is the only aspect of his being that is affected by the presence of Morrigan. In times of war, she will give him the energy to fight constantly, allowing her to feed from the battle. This was seen during the Rikti invasion, where Lunk would fight continuously for days on end, atleast until the physical ravages of the fight took their toll.
Speed: With his vast strength, and ability to lower his weight through anti-grav implants, Lunk is surprisingly agile for a person of his size.
Melee: The mix of immense strength, and superior training in close quarters combat, make Lunk a formidable, and rarely defeated, opponent in both armed and unarmed combat.
Blasts: Lunk's years of firearms training, and his natural ability to negate recoil, make him a crack shot with most weapons (providing he can get his finger through the trigger guard).
Support: Although trained in field surgery, his skills offer little in the heat of a fight.
Control: whilst using the CCP46-1 units, he has a high ability of incapacitating an opponent, Although this is now used primarily during sparring matches, to avoid injury to the opponent.
[edit] Retirement
With a family to look after, and with multiple skirmishes around their home with Arachnos attempting to obtain the Twins, Lunk and Rebecca decided it was time to retire from the heroic life style, and retreat to a secluded location in the UK.
Very few people where told of the exact location, but it is still possible to contact him, if the need arises, through KM-Tech, although all contact is rigorously checked.
