Arachidamia. The warrior princess. Sword-swinging, regenerating, with a high capacity for battle, yet with wit and intelligence. This remarkable woman also moonlights as a babysitter. Well, somebody has to. This total warrior is a peerless mystic, showing command of magical energies and forces, as well as astonishing skill with swords, all synergising into one package that is well-suited for hunting the darkest of demons, ghosts, creatures from the old world, and everything dangerous in the world of magic.

Contents

[edit] Affiliations

  • Unity Vigil: Veteran Member, Liaison to MAGI
  • MAGI: At first Press Liaison Officer, her role within that organisation is now more... intricate and murky.
  • Damia was once a probationary member of The Warriors, but chose to go straight after being apprehended by the legendary Nevermore.
  • She is apparently close to the reporter, Natasha Sheers (a fact which she does not make issue of, for whatever reason.)

[edit] Personality

Damia is a complex individual. She is a fighter first and foremost, and her determination and iron will are testament to this. However, when she's not in the thick of the fight, she can be as warm and caring as you please. Her willingness to throw everything into everything she does translates into an earnest passion for living that dwarfs most people. When people speak of her, one of the most frequent descriptors that they use is that she is "intensely alive."

[edit] Motivation

Unlike the warriors from whom she split, she does not value strength and battle for its own sake. Rather, her motivation is to use the battle to save the world from the darkness that tries to engulf it on a regular basis. While she can deal with politics, she does not enjoy it. Always a tactical fighter, she nevertheless believes that she needs to do everything within her power to achieve safety for those she protects.

[edit] Powers

[edit] Primary Powers

Damia has exhibited a level of skill with the art of the sword that puts her in the top bracket of the transhumans (Effective skill quantification for these individuals will always be difficult, due to the lethal nature of their skill, and the fact that the only way to test them to the limit is to put them up against an opponent of equivalent skill.) She has shown some ability to fuel her sword strikes with magical energy, enabling her to strike demons, ghosts, and other supernatural and incorporeal entities.

[edit] Secondary Powers

Also shown is a heightened regenerative capacity. This appears to be fuelled mostly by magic, although studies have shown that she appears to be tapping another magical energy level (one appearing to be made up entirely of life-giving energy) directly and internally, rather than actually casting any sort of healing spells. At the high end, this channelling ability has led to moments where her reactions have been increased manifold, enabling her to dodge bullets, beams, and other fast-moving attacks, for just a few seconds. These so-nicknamed "Moments of Glory" are highly dangerous.

[edit] Additional Powers

Her senses are highly acute, to the point of being preternatural when she concentrates on fighting. Her healing factor has also, to some extent, slowed her outward symptoms of aging, although not stopped them completely.

[edit] Travel

Damia can move at superhuman speeds, fuelled as she is by magical energy. She has also been seen to fly.

[edit] Abilities

She seems to have a domestic side, as shown by her cooking skills, and, when she's not being a warrior, can be quite a homebody. From her work in MAGI's press liaison department, she has turned into quite the Spin Doctor, although she doesn't see herself as a deceiver, more as a translator and explainer. She has also become a reasonably skilled babysitter, specialising in taking care of the children of metahumans, especially those children who exhibit powers (when you can run at superspeed, fly, and regenerate all damage, what more can they possibly do to you?)

[edit] Vulnerabilities

As with anyone who regenerates, if incoming damage exceeds her ability to heal, then it's entirely possible she can be taken down. Nobody's managed this long enough to work out whether she'll die. Beyond the aforementioned magics, her main defence is her skill, which, while prodigious, does have ultimate limitations.

[edit] Equipment

Her swords, which she seems able to summon and dismiss at will, possibly through some use of Hammerspace. Lots of cute leather armour.

[edit] Character History

A number of years ago, the Lewis family lived in Striga Isle. Killed by the then 5th Column, the parents of Mary Lewis left her in the care of her older brother, Theodore, when he was 18 and she was 15.

theodore soon fell in with the Warriors, and began to espouse their philosophies. After he became a full Warrior, he began to train his sister in fighting, reasoning that he had every right to make her as strong as him. In addition, her natural magical channelling ability began to fully blossom, advancing from the purely accelerated healing rates she had already shown to a full-on regenerative capacity. In this aspect, she received training from several of Striga's mystics, learning the basics, so that she could control her growing power. As they trained her spirit and mind, so her brother trained her body and heart, teaching her strength, truth, honour, loyalty and, above all, the joy of battle, the rush of conflict, the exultation of the sound of steel against steel.

Roundabout her 19th birthday, after much petitioning from her brother, and many mutterings about her suitability, she was made a probationary member of The Warriors, taking as her identity that of the ancient Spartan Queen, Arachidamia. She spent the next year or two following their lead, helping in some of their minor actions, mainly those involving action against other gangs. All this came to a head when she and her group attempted a raid on a shipment of artefacts entering Talos Island. The raid was foiled by the legendary vigilante-hero, Nevermore, and his original Vigil. Apprehended, Mary was released on bail. Having seen the full truth of what she had been doing, and keeping Nevermore as her example, she swore then to go straight, to use what she could do for right, like the hero who had taken down her team so easily. Above all, she never wanted to be defeated again.

As part of the help and rehab surrounding her bail, she sought and won a job at MAGI in Paragon, working in their PR department. As Press Liaison, her job was to give press briefings, write press releases, and generally dilute the impact of information released to avoid panic over some of the frankly horrific mystical incursions that were often happening. At some stage during her time here, two things happened. Firstly, she registered the name Arachidamia as a fully-licensed hero, the better to set right some of the mistakes she had made. Secondly, she became seconded to a sub-unit within MAGI, an unofficial black-ops crew, which had no official name, but was known as the Snark Hunters, after Lewis Carolls Poem. This team dealt with threats that MAGI simply could not make public. Demon Hunting, hunting Dark Wizards, and generally doing the dirty little jobs that needed to be done, but could not be seen to be done. it was on one of these missions that the oft-referred-to marriage proposal was received, the one that still sometimes gives her nightmares. At some stage, her brother, Theodore, was killed by an Envoy of Shadows, during one of the Warriors abortive summonings of those entities. She ploughed her grief back into her work, carrying on, taking the fight to the darkness in his name, for his sake.

Sometime back in 2006, a new director of Black Ops started using the team as his own private army, taking care of his own private work. Finally, this rankled so much that Mary, and one of the other Hunters, one Eddie DuMal, finally called a halt, cutting deals with MAGI's top brass that would get the whole thing shut down in exchange for just letting everyone else get on with their lives. At this stage, Mary threw herself completely into her hero work, although she is still deep in MAGI's political and mystical affairs. Finally, to crown all this, she joined up with Zortel's reincarnation of the Vigil, the Unity Vigil as one of its four or five most senior officers and MAGI Liaison. Now a consummate, supremely skilled and powered, security-rating 50, Omega-cleared hero, Arachidamia, the warrior woman, had come back to where she had entered the hero world. With the Vigil.

[edit] Trivia

  • Mary bakes good cookies.
  • Damia has tought the art of the sword to several people, including Spiral Dawn
  • She has received at least one marriage proposal from a demon, who reasoned that it might stop her dismembering him and sending him back to hell. It failed.
  • Mary completely expended a Class A Arcane Implement in fighting an Incursion From The Tentacle Dimensions. The paperwork to justify it was fearsome. They wanted to make her pay compensation for it, until she told them, in graphic terms that were not for the squeamish, exactly what the creature would have done to the world and Paragon had she not sent it back. They shut up, but still made her fill out the forms in triplicate anyway.
