Before the villain costume options were added to City of Heroes I found you could make an especially good all-American cossie in the villains costume editor, and ended up making a corrupted demonically possessed version of American Dream (American Nightmare) for use in the game.
When the villain options were added to CoH I felt I couldn't play American Dream as Id already tied him into American Nightmare's backstory as the Golden Age heroes corpse that he highjacked for his own physical body. Instead I decided that he would be the Golden Age grandfather of US Angel (Who wears a battlesuit captured by her grandfather, and redecorated in his colours). After that he became enamoured with the idea of becoming costumed hero and adopted the Identity of the American Dream.

[edit] Character History
[edit] The Second World War
Peter Lang was used to the adoration of others thanks to his High School Football superstar status, as well as his general go-getter spirit. After stopping a robbery at his local grocery store he realised that he could be a real hero, and developed the costumed persona of American Dream.
As American Dream he fought local street crime as well the Fith Column, who been leading the Axis war effort on American soil. He met, and fell in love with the mutant Secret Hope, a girl who had adored him at school, but he had not noticed before due to her being the shy academic type. He also had a long running feud with an armoured Nazi agent Fraulien Stahl, who he later defeated with the help from Secret Hope, and kept her armour as a trophy.
As the war drew to a close both himself, and now partner Secret Hope met Knightwatchman I, and became a semi regular team much to the annoyance of the Knightwatchman.
[edit] The 50s, and the Cold War
During the 50s American Dream, and his now wife Secret Hope fought against Communist aggression on American soil, battling several superpowered agents including the vampiric agent Nataliya Yurinov.
[edit] Death of a Dream
In 2006 American Dream died due to old age, and the former hero was to be buried in his old uniform, as a mark of honour. However he never got his burial.
His wife Secret Hope, who'd aged much slower due to her own mutant abilities suffered a mental breakdown, and sought a way of restoring her beloved husband. Before even his body could be prepared she took it from the morgue, dressing him in the very uniform he was to be buried in. She then broke into the offices of M.A.G.I. where she found details on a Circle of Thorns Mage who might of be able to ressurect him, and hunted him down.
Eventually she caught up with the Mage, and forced him into agreeing to restore American Dream. However the Mage betrayed Secret Hope, instead binding a viscious Demon into the now dead hero's body, and it's first act in our reality was to dismember Secret Hope.
The Demon corrupted American Dream's physical body, and escaped from M.A.G.I., who'd now become aware of Secret Hope's insane plan. As the Demon learnt about the man who's body, and uniform, he now wore, he took great delight in tarnishing the former hero's name as the villain American Nightmare.
When the genius grandaughter of American Dream, and Secret Hope, discovered what had happened she vowed to destroy American Nightmare. After modifying Fraulien Stahl's battlesuit captured by American Dream, she carried on his legacy as US Angel.
